OMG!! I can’t believe what is happening. To cut a long story short, we had a re-structure at work. They decided to scrap all the managerial positions and create new ones, which meant that some people were at risk of redundancy which included my manager. She was offered the new position and took it. After the 4 weeks cooling period, she deiced that she didn’t like it and quit. So her job was advertised internally and I applied. Not something I would have done 18 weeks ago but was persuaded by my group and mum.

And guess what? I have been invited for an interview  At first I thought, well they have to give everyone who has applied internally a shot so that's all it is. But then when I thought about it, I really do think I could do it. My colleague John (only 2 of us in the office) has that can't be arsed and don't care attitude so when he is here I feel exactly the same. It makes me laugh that he has gone for the promotion as well. His mood/attitude really rubs off on me. I think I am held back a bit in the job I am doing at the moment. Because if it's quiet, which it is 80% of the time, I just spend it on here not really doing some of things I could be. Don’t get me wrong I do everything I have to but not the things that could be done. I feel why should I when John doesn’t care!!

Half of me thinks he could get it as he sounds good on paper but then my other half thinks that he won't get it. Mainly his attitude stinks, he cannot communicate well, he thinks he's the bees knees (when he's not) and just basically thinks he knows everything (which he doesn't). Believe it or not I do actually like him but as a work colleague I don't rate him at all.

So anyway, yes, I have an interview at 13:30 on Thursday next week. I'm absolutely bricking it!!! It just seems such a big step from where I am now. As I mentioned before, I would have a company mobile, laptop and car.

The thing is I don’t know what they are looking for. A lot of people at my company have been in this industry for years either working for us or competitors. So if they are looking for someone who hasn’t had the influences of other companies then that would help me. I just don’t know what to expect.

Worse thing is, we were meant to be having a review but it hasn’t been done. If I knew what they thought of what I have done so far, then I might have an idea as to whether I have a shot at this promotion or not.

Well, it’s done now so we will just have to wait and see.

Wish me luck x x
(Sorry to go on too much)

Wow - what an amazing opportunity.

Just prepare what you can and be yourself at the interview.

If it's to be you will get the job. If not, the experience will stand you in good stead. Clearly they think you can do the job on paper or you wouldn't have been invited to interview. Good luck!!

Thanks T I. I work for quite a large company so at least they will know that I am wanting progression and will hopefully consider me for anything else that comes up in the future if not this one.

I just worry that I'm not experienced enough but I know deep down that I have the potential given the opportunity.

Thanks for yoour kind words x x

Congrats SB - and good luck!!

Do you know what format the interview will take yet? Most large companies go down the competancy-based route for most management roles, so it would be a good idea to start thinking about what you have done in relation to the requirements of the role, and remember to think in terms of "i" and "me" not "us" and "we". :) Hope that helps! x

ooooh good luck!
it's great you have the confidence to go for it - well done

How exciting! I agree with Lucy about compentence based interview techniques, definitely think about occasions when you have demonstrated leadership, proactive thinking etc etc. Even if they don't use behavioural techniques it will still be useful.
Could you speak to your current manager about what they are looking for, maybe ask for a copy of her objectives so you know what you are letting yourself in for.
What is it about the job that your current manager doesn't like? Are they things that you would like/could handle?
Best of luck for Thursday and let us know how it goes
xx

You go Becks!! Best of luck for next week, I'm sure you'll shine!
