Exercise Question

Hi guys,

I have been unable to do any exercise for 6 or 7 years now due to suffering with M.E and fibromyalgia (it is at the point now where walking is an issue for me which is annoying).

My problem is that I hate being inactive. I'm not able to work for the same reasons and I can't get out of the house on my own as I can't really get around without support.

Someone had suggested yoga or pilates but I don't want to do something like that unless I'm following a qualified instructor as I really don't want to do myself an injury!

I had thought of getting myself a little exercise bike at the end of this month and was wondering the best way of starting an exercise regime on that.
I was thinking 3 times a week for 30 minutes to start with and then building up (this would allow me time between each session to recover and rest properly).

Is this a good idea or should I be starting differently?
Any thoughts/suggestions/ideas are welcome!

Hi Mahina Lani (sounds Hawaiian!), welcome to the fitness section. I'm not qualified as a therapist or trainer, but I would really advise you talk to your doctor about exercise and see what he/she suggests, I would think you should be careful with your conditions that you don't overdo. Perhaps ask about exercise bike or even a reclining bike (that might be easier for you to get on and off of), see if your doctor has a plan you could follow. Do you go to any physical therapy?

Hi!
It is Hawaiian, means heavenly moon.

My Dr is unfortunately worse than useless when it comes to my illness and his suggestion was "join a gym".
That was it. No recommendations as to what machines to use, what exercises to do, nothing.
The specialist I saw said that I was a long way off from exercising, but to be honest, I cannot just sit and do nothing anymore. I'm sick of letting this illness beat me.

So, I figured I was going to have to do it myself. I did some research online and found that swimming and cycling were two exercises that were good for people with M.E and FMS as they're fairly low impact. I don't have a swimming pool in easy reach of where I live, so I thought getting myself an exercise bike was the next best option.

As to physical therapy, it was something I'd asked my Dr about, but again the response was "that's not going to help, join a gym" and then waved leaflets for a gym that I swear he gets commission for getting people to join at me.

right i will have a think about this and come back to you, might early next week though as away this week. but may take lap top with me.
will research.
