OT - DIY costs

We had a quote from safestyle windows last night, for 7 windows, french doors, patio door, front door and back door. List price was 21k, discount price was 9.5k, if we'd have committed to it last night we could have got them for about 5k. Obviously we weren't keen to commit to it as we've not had any other quotes yet and we've no idea how to guage this price. We've got a budget of between 15-20k to get the house up to scratch, but it needs rewiring throughout, boiler and central heating, bathroom, kitchen knocked through to diner and then general decoration. Mr G will be able to get some of this done himself, but some of it is specialist work which he can't do. I know the budget isn't huge, so we need it to stretch as far as possible.

Anybody had similar amount of doors/windows installed? What was the cost (if you don't mind me asking?) also any ideas on:

Re-wire of 3 bed semi?

Combi boiler and 8 radiators?

knocking supporting wall from kitchen to dining room and put a supportive joist in?

TIA!

I had safestyle a few years ago and couldn't get rid of them! :asskick:They started off at 17k and came down to 9k in a matter of hours. Never again. In the end we went with a local firm for 7k who didn't waste our time.
I would say get quotes for each job from different people. We are going through home improvements too at the moment but all different to yours. Good luck I think we may need it x

I work for a window company and what i say is if they can start at 17k and come down to 5k they are full of it and i would suggest sticking to local firms rather than national companies as in my past experince it is eaiser to get local tradesman to come back if there are any problems rather than some big national companies that use sub contractors. Good luck with the search.

I would agree. I once had a national window company come to give me a quote and they said they would sit and wait for my husband to come home until they gave me a quote. Considering I am single he had a hell of a long wait. I was fuming at his attitude. My nana was dying in a hospice at the time and I couldn't get rid of him - all he kept saying was "ah yes, I know you need to be away, your nana is in the hospice" like he didn't believe me. Anyway, that's me rambling on. I went to a local guy near where I live, excellent service, excellent price - much better than a national firm. Wish I could remember who it was!!

21K list and then they offer them to you for 5K, then obviously 21k is make belief. Personally I don't trust any company works like that. Having said that 5K sounds okay.

to buy and fit a combi boiler 1500 - 2000, radiator £50 a go, not sure how much tit would cost to do install and do plumbing, prehaps 3K - 3.5k all in. Not sure baout the others.

I suggest you get a number of quotes.

Hi Ruth, my OH is a builder and I can get you some quotes if you like? Please PM me with the details and I'll get back to you ASAP.

21k for the windows sound ridiculous!
