does anyone use there syns weekly rather than daily and would you say it works beter that way i had been having nearly my full 15 a day have tried to cut this down to 10 and have found im loosing maybe 1/2lb more in a week which is the best way and how many do you have

I count my syns over the week although SW are now saying not to do this (my last SW consultant said, if it works for you, just keep doing it, then if you stop losing weight, have a re-think) and some weeks I have the full 105, some weeks I have 70.

My Mum was having less than 70 and her weightloss slowed, she upped them to 70 and it kickstarted again - no idea what all that was about but the SW consultant encouraged her to have no less than 70 and it worked.

She's now a petite size 10.

My weight loss is sooooo slow! I use my sins weekly as it keeps me on the straight and narrow at the weekend. I stick to it 100%, and at the weekends count my sins religiously but still I lose 1/2 here, a 1lb there-it is frustrating and I wonder what I am doing wrong!!! Lol! Maybe I should cut my sins down as you have done-but I love them so! lol! Also , i have a lot of weight to lose and think if I cut them down now, what will I do later on in my weight loss?

Just to (hopefully) try and reassure you- I have always been a slow loser. I started SW over a year ago and have always just lost an average of 1lb a week. I do have all my syns and like you, love them!

I know I could speed it up if I wanted, but I have a lot to lose so want to make this journey pleasurable and sustainable long term- and besides all those little 1lbs add up as I have lost over 4 and half stone so far!!!

I totally agree with cocktailprincess. I've been thinking about this a lot recently. I've been enjoying my syns, this time rather than trying not to have them (usually 70 per week, sometimes a bit more) my weight loss may not be huge per week, but I am happy on it, really happy! I don't have that desire to go off plan (at the mo..) and know if I really fancy something, I can have it as long as I count the syns. I think that's key to the success of SW, you need to do it in a way that works for you and enables you to do it for life.

If you cut your syns and stop enjoying the plan so much, would you be tempted to go off the rails? Possibly. It is better to lose a bit slower and keep it off than drop the weight in 4 months and pile it back on again.

Anyway, you're doing great :D

Hi Jezebel,

I started SW 10 weeks ago & at first decided not to use my syns at all, firstly as I never wanted them, I was always full on free food & secondly I thought in my mind Id surely do better off without syns.

In my first month I lost 9.5lbs but in my second month it slowed to only 4lbs for the whole month. My consultant told me to have all my syns, I try bewteen 10-15 a day( which I still find hard).

If I go over one day then I'll have less the next & feel this balances out but I may not necessarily do this the the days leading up to my weigh-in.

70 a week seems to do me fine. At first i often only had 20-30 a week but my weigh loss was so slow, i loose more with 70 syns.

This is really interesting as my Mum lost better using the syns than not using ....... why is that?? Anyone know?

Its not like she wasn't eating much at all (ie, eating too little), she was having plenty of free food but once she re-introduced the syns, the weightloss increased.

hard to know which one works for you trial an error i suppose untill its right for you thanks for advice x

I lose better taking my syns (I have most of them friday and saturday) My consultant said to start on 15 and drop to 10 if it slowed, but I generally have around 70.

This is really interesting. I have recently cut my syns to an average of 5 per day, cos I am v close to my target and thought this would help. Now I wonder if I should up them a bit. Now I'm confused!!

Yes I would up the syns, by week 3 Id lost 8.5lbs & wasn't having syns at all so my consultant said to stick at what I'm doing if I'm ok with that. Then my weightloss slowed right down & now I have to eat 10-15 syns a day, my consultant has told me if you're not eating your syns you're not doing it 100%.

Here comes the science bit...

Free foods are either high in protein or carbohydrates and low in calorie density (energy*volume) so you can have loads in quanitity but may have only had a few calories.

Syns are (generally) full of fat and sugar therefore have a higher calorie density so that one Mars bar probably had twice the calories of that lasagna you just had.

So when we include our syns in the plan our calorie intake increases, but our body is still using more energy. The assumption most people make is that by reducing the syns your reducing the calories your taking in so therefore your body will use fat to make energy. This is not the case - atleast not to start with.

Our bodies go into starvation mode - even though we think we're filling them with energy - chances are we're not taking in as many as you think (thats why we love this diet :p)

So in a nut shell, when you reduce your syns your body goes "Aahh!! Hang onto everything, put the fire out, don't burn anything, we're not gunna get anything else"

But when you start using them again it goes "oh its ok, we've got loads to burn, throw another bar on the fire its brass monkeys in here!"

Might be long winded, but thats the gist!!

I was thinking the same way as kevandju5, since I don't have a lot of weight to lose (approx. 10 lbs). For people who don't have a lot to lose, I wonder if syn values should be adjusted. Is there anyone out there who doesn't have a lot of weight to lose, who has had success while eating 10-15 syns a day? I would be interested in learning how you are finding it.

I do mine weekly, because I like having a good drink on a wekend. Should it stop working I'll go to daily. Using 105 a week at the minute.

I'm thinking I may give myself one 'day off' a week (probably more likely to be one meal off really - Friday night Chippy night, or Sunday lunch with pudding). I figure this sets me up for a realistic maintenance after I've lost weight. Just out of interest, in theory, I could probably go easy on the syns all week (say 5 a day) and then splurge on the one day, and have most of it covered by my syns. Is that right?

For example, how many syns in a glass of wine?
a pint of lager?
a packet of french fries?

Thanks.x

Have answered myself - 4.5, 9 and 4.5!!!! Guess I'll be sticking to wine then!
