PGL Boreatton Park

I've booked my kids a short break to Boreatton Park, one of the PGL Centres, for a multi-activity holiday. They're going 7th to 10th April. It'll give me and my husband some time to ourselves for the first time ever!

Anyone on this forum have any experience with PGL or with Boreatton Park? Any tips? Advice?

Hi

My kids went ski-ing with their middle school a few years back and the school always booked through PGL. They went every year for 4 years - no complaints at all.

A Friend of my son went to a PGL summer camp on the Isle of Wight and had such a great time he wanted to stay an extra week!

The kids are all told PGL stands for "Parents Get Lost"!!

Hi

My daughter went on a PGL trip to the Ardeche (sp?) region in France. She went with her school when she was almost 12. They went canoeing, rock climbing, high wiring, caving (she didn't like that much) & mountain biking. They were accommdated in wooden chalets, the site had a shop and a swimming pool; it was all clean and well mantained. Entertainment was laid on in the evenings and the food though basic was tasty and plentiful.

She had a great time and came back brimming with confidence, safety is taken very seriously and I wouldn't hesitate in letting her go again.

In fact we've talked about going on a family holiday there.

Thank you Lindylou and Cheb for your experiences.

I am looking forward to having a few days to myself. If it is a success, chances are we will book for them to go for a week next year, doing motorshports (son) and heaven knows what (daughter)!

The web address is: pgl dot co dot uk.

Yes they do it's Untitled Page
(well it would be wouldn't it) the above link works .but should read Untitled Page

In case you 're interested It stands for Peter Gordon Lawrence. He was the man who founded it many years ago. He died a few years ago but the company is still run by the same team as they did a management buy-out to prevent it being bought by another hols company.

I did PGL as a child , also did hols with a rival co & have to say that the PGL ones were much more exciting but apallingly supervised.no that's not entirely true. the campingon Isle of Arran was OK but the canoeing down the Ardeche/sailing in St. tropez was almost negligent.kids getting sunstroke & dehydration. no regulation on acces to alcohol.Ienjoyed it but at the same time felt it was a v poorly run ship.( this was early 1970's)
However these days it seems to be a highly polished organisation, god enough to do quite a lot of school trip business.
when I discovered recently that they now do some Family sessions I got straight on the phone & booked. 5 of us .1 week on the dordogne, some canoeing plus a whole lot more. So if someone doesn't like this mornong's activity, then all they have to do is wait till afterlunch. It makes me excited just writing about it.
Ps they are based in Ross-on -wye in herefordshire. If you've never been to the wye then you need to go .it is serenely beautiful & undeveloped. They now have sites all over britain & france.
Happy hols.

I think it is a great idea to have some time to yourselves Amanda and all the better if you know the kids are happy.
As you know kids can consume our lives and it is important to have you and him time!
Matty

Jane, I had heard about the family holidays, it is a recent addition. Now that I am fitter it is a possible alternative to a cruise (!).

At the same time, I think the kids are old enough to have some time by themselves, without mum and dad hovering in the background.

Matty, you are so right. We are looking forward to a bit of time by ourselves. In 13 years we have NEVER had time without the kids. Not even one night.

Gosh I thought we were the only ones who never managed to get away from them. We don't have any active 'grand parents' or uncles. are you in the same situation.
I toally agree about not having them with you a
every moment of the hols. I'm assuming that we'll be split up at least in some activities,& when we are back on campus I fully expect them to become feral & roam in hunting packs, returning just for food & bed.
Cruise? wow! with or without kids?

Jane,

We live in Scotland, the grandparents live in Wales.

We cruise as a family and even when the kids were young, they were always kept fully entertained by the kids club activities. Now they are almost teens (12 and 13) they please themselves and dip in and out of kids club activities and the pool. I usually see them at breakfast, lunch and dinner, and search them out at different times of the day to see what they're up to.

It's a safe environment where I can let them be independent, but can discretely keep an eye on them from time to time. We usually meet up with them at the end of the evening (around midnight) and have a hot chocolate at one of the cafes (they're open 24 hours).

We usually go with P and O and I can't recommend them enough for families. This year we're going with Royal Caribbean (Navigator) out of Southampton - no flying! We can take as much luggage as will fit in the car!

Hi AmandaJane,
my daughter went to Boreatton park last year with the school she had the most fantastic time absolutely loved it my tips would be alot of the activities can involve being covered in mud so the school advised us plenty of warm changes of clothes wellies and some old trainers that can be thrown away after ! ( and we did)
All her clothes came back mud infested and we threw most of it away but it was worth it she had a ball ! xxx

Wow, this took me back, I stayed on Boreatton Park on a PGL with my school when I was 10, loved it all!!!

Goodness, I cant believe its still going 23 years later!!!
