OT tattoo advice please :)

Over the years, I have always wanted to have a tattoo and it is on my to do list....

I am very aware that it is a permenent fixture and so want it to be exactly right....

So questions for those of you who have them...

  1. Do you think it would be better to wait till I am at goal weight, ie will my skin shrinking affect the way the tattoo looks?
  2. Where do people go for tattoo inspiration? I am sort of leaning toward a celtic design, but just don't know what I want exactly and dn't want to go to a studio in case I feel pressured into something before I am ready.
  3. Where on your body do you have yours? I don't always want mine on show all the time, especially if I were wearing a dressy dress or something.. I was thinking nape of neck/ between shoulders.
  4. Any other advice?
xx

i would wait till you are nearer target, just incase the skin does change,

try bmezine.com for inspiration!

Hi Tillyfloss,

I have a few, some i like more than others but dont regret any of them, I would have tried within reason to keep them 'hideable', I have

1) stars on my right foot like a trail down the side which i luurrve
2) hearts on the side of my arm (same as Jade goody, me & my friend had them when she died cause we loved her.. this is my only main visible one
3) my name in a celticy design at the base of my back (i hate this one because i started with the celtic design which i love but it was too high so i had my name underneath at a later date and they then put anther celtic design around it, but now its just large and ugly, thank god I cant see it myself ...lol, wish i could have something else there now but hey ho..
4) my ex husbands name along with mine and our wedding date on my right top hip/thigh, a mistake i guess, would never have a name again for a partner but i dont regret it, he was part of my life! oh and luckily my 2nd husband has the same name so just need to get the date gone over...lol
5) a bumble bee with my name over it so it reads 'lizi bee' on my right shoulder which shows when i wear vest tops but can be covered with a thicker vest top.

I originally wanted one at the top of my arm which at the time a friend talked me out of and Im really glad she did, its more feminine on a shoulder or back like youve described.

Most tattooists if you describe the sort of thing ud like they will sketch something to ur taste, thats what i did with my stars as all the ones on piccs were 'hard stars' and i wanted soft feminine ones and i luv them.

Its a very personal choice and ur doing the right thing by thinking properly about it first. I would have many more but like you i dont want them highly visible and am running out of hidden spots...lol

Edited to add Ive never seen any effects of weight loss altering any tattoo, no ones ever advised me of that and it would depend on where, your back isnt a terribly fatty area, wheres your stomach etc is and may sag a little i guess if you had a tattoo whilst large

Hi,
I don't have a tattoo but thought I'd give some input :)
I would say it depends where you get it as to whether skin shrinking would affect it. I'm only 17 at the moment, but I know that I do eventually want to get a tattoo in the future; tattoos with meaning are the best, so I am leaning towards getting my mum's birth date in roman numerals with some text. I also like the idea of wrist tattoos as they can be hidden by jewellery or a watch, though the placement of yours sounds nice :)

i was going to get one on my lower back BUT i heard someone say they were "tramp stamps" or "slag tags" so it has put me off a bit!!! i would like to get one that said (in a different language) "no going back!!!" i think you should wait until you are at goal before you get one as my mate got a tattoo on her back (she was a big girl) and when she stood up and her excess skin moved back into place, the tattoo was lop sided!!

Definately wait until you are at goal. Yes, your skin shrinking will affect the way it looks.

Where do people go for tattoo inspiration? I am sort of leaning toward a celtic design, but just don't know what I want exactly and dn't want to go to a studio in case I feel pressured into something before I am ready.

I knew what I wanted on all three occasions. However, the tattoo artist will have loads of designs to choose from. You can go in as many times as you want to have a look - loads of people do. Why not draw your own, I did for one of them and he did it freehand - unique design.

Where on your body do you have yours? I don't always want mine on show all the time, especially if I were wearing a dressy dress or something.. I was thinking nape of neck/ between shoulders.

I only have one visible one - at the side of my left foot. It is a four leaf clover and disign around it. Another one is on my right outside thigh and the third is on the bottom of my back - waist level.

Any other advice?

You have obviously thought about it, but think about it more. I only regret one, and thats the one which is visible. Choose your location carefully. I know you don't want to ever think you will put weight on again, but think about it - if you did would you want a tattoo looking all stretched and colourless. Also, and I am going to sound like you mam here :D, but think about what it will look like when you are old :D:D

I would wait until you get to goal too-at least that way you'll have time to settle for one you really like. I changed my mind many times before I found the right one. I loooked at loads of pictures on the net. I even used google images, as well as tattoo websites. I finally settled for a flower/vine tattoo on my lower back and I love it still. I can hide it when I want, but believe me, when I get to goal it will get shown a lot more! I now want to have japanese kanji symbols on my inner arm and maybe something small on my shoulder. I did like the stars that Rihanna has on her neck but I've ummed and ahhd for ages about those and whether they would look stupid at my age.

I have a tat of a winged dragon on the left side of my chest, kind of half on/half off my boob I was about 15st when it was done 10yrs or so ago and since then I have been various weights up to 21st 6lbs and skin wise its never changed, but I agree with others maybe look at it for a goal reward :)

Thanks for all your replies...
I am thinking some sort of celtic or egyptian design... still not absolutely sure where but I think upper back as a probability.
Thing is, I don't want my weight goal to be the time where I go out and do everything I dreamed of, as I am trying to take control of my life from now! Some things, I can't physically do until I am slimmer, like parachute jump and horse ride, but certain things, Like the cutting off my hair I can do now!
I was just more concerned about whether it might looked stretched or wrinkled... but maybe where I am thinking of having it, that would be less of a problem than if say i was having it on my tummy or thighs or something...
I havent looked at this that closely yet, but what sort of cost am I looking at... Probably all black, maybe 2-3".. any ideas?

x

My dragon (he's called Errol, Terry Pratchett fan's will get it ;)) is 3" wide and 5.5" long cost me £70 10 or so years ago and took 2.5ish hours to do

If you want to have it done sooner rather than later I'd say pick somewhere that doesn't expand/shrink with weight loss or gain and go for it, I would of thought the upper back area is ok :D I'd have more but Mr Exp is against  Errol was here before him so he's ok

I have a couple of tattoo's and don't regret them. I have one on my back and one on my ankle, I am thinking of getting another one, once you get one you will probably want more.

You can have a look at my tattoo it's in my photo album. Yes it's pretty big but I planned it for 2 years before I had it done so I don't regreat it at all. They baby (that is now 9) that I found I was expecting a couple of months later was not planned though (would of held off on the tat if I'd known) so I now have stretch marks through it sadly!

Hi I haven't got a tattoo, but I thought I would add my thoughts:)
Why don't you wait until you are at goal, simply because you will probably be so pleased with the way you look that you may feel that you dont want one any more.
