The introduction of a 'fat tax' on obese passengers moved one step forward today with Ryanair announcing ways it could levy the charge.
The Ryanair proposals are:
* Charge per kg over 130kg/20 stone (male) and 100kg/15 stone (females);
* Charge per inch for every waist inch over 45 inch (male) and 40 inch (female);
* Charge for every point in excess of 40 points on the Body Mass Index (+30 points is obese);
* Charge for a second seat if passengers’ waist touches both armrests simultaneously.

The above four points seem to us to be the simplest, fairest and administratively easiest to apply. In all cases we’ve limits at very high levels so that a ‘fat tax’ will only apply to those really large passengers who invade’ the space of the passengers sitting beside them."
Passengers can vote for their preference on www.ryanair.com until Monday April 27.

if they are charging more for 'fat' customers then they should provide those customers with larger seats!!!!!!!!!!!!! not expect them to pay more and still squeeze into a tiny plane seat!!!!!!!!!!

Well, just goes to show you what a "huge" problem obesity is causing, but I can understand it if you have a fat family going abroad, can you imagine the discomfort and embarrasment for them if they are shoved together, they would never be able to fit. Also, if they put in larger seats, there would be fewer passangers carried, therefore charges would go up as all airlines are trying to keep prices as low as possible.......The crux of the matter is, obesity is a very, very serious problem now and the less easy we make it, the more the government are hoping it will force people to make healthier changes to their diet and lifestyle. I see so many seriously overweight children with their overweight children, waddling along , stuffing their faces I want to scream Lipotrim at them!!!!

Wow.. what a narrow minded thing to say.. Thats really disgusting.. how would you hav felt if someone had come up to you.. a random stranger shouting that they shoudl do a diet..

Sorry you feel that way, Kitteh.

I would never, ever embarrass anyone by actually SHOUTING at them as I have been classed as OBESE for much of my life. But if parents are not seeing that they should set a good, healthy example to their kids, where will it all end?

I just want everyone to know how amazingly effective the Lipotrim diet is for people who are SERIOUS about losing it.

I completely agree with supaslimma. I think what is more disgusting is the fact that parents do not control what their children eat. What adults eat is completely up to them they make their own decisions but not let the children follow suit. My sister is big and eats all the naughty things which is up to her but her children get a healthy dinner everyday and are limited to snacks and sweets which is how it should be.

And also agree with goldengirl there are limits to everything so whats the difference.

This is one thats close to my heart, as i once had an orange belt extender to travel to the Dom republic with, the person next to me was my Husband so he wouldn't have complained about my size:)

When i got pregnant with my DS, i promised that i wouldn't ruin his life my making him fat, (before i had him i used to think the only person i as hurting was myself) so when he was 8mths old i got my self sorted out and lost 10st.
My son is fit and healthy and enjoys life, he has a huge appetite, because he plays sports every day and i feed him a fully balanced diet every day with snack if needed. He is perfect for his height and age and i work really hard to make sure food doesn't become an issue for him.
When i diet i do it so he doesn't notice as i don't want him to have a hang up

any way thats my life story told ...........:)

I think when it comes to your children they should have the best possible start in life i have a child and i do my best to encorage healthy eating and a healthy balanced diet. I know im a fine one to talk cause i dont follow it for my self but i dont want to see my child un happy over weight and un healthy. I get anoid at parents when i see children who are really overweight because its not the childs fault most parents are just lazy and will take their children mc ds everyday and let them eat junk.

I think this fat tax is disgusting and is discrimination!

What will be next? A charge for your hair colour? your sex? or the colour of your skin??

It is utterly ridiculous and they should be ashamed

Gone a little off topic here talking about children but .... i do agree - it is not their fault and i too blame the parents for letting them eat like they do.

That being said - back to charging for obese people - fair play.

As harsh as it sounds if i got onto a plane, didnt fit into the seat properly and hung over onto the person beside me not only would i be embarrassed i would also feel sooo bad for making their journey uncomfortable.

I think ryan air are going a little ott though with the whole charging for having a high bmi - as a classic example - my brother (bless him) is only 5'1 but is a marine and is proper ripped with big muscles and his bmi is high and tells him he is overweight (due to his muscle content) now would they really charge someone like him?

How an earth would they go about this? Weigh you at the check in desk, take your height aswell? :copon: Demoralising!

I think if airlines are going to charge extra for people who are obese it should be done on waist size compared to the size of the seats. If the waist is too big to allow not only yourself comfort but the person next to you then i think we should follow suit and charge for the extra seat.

The 'fat tax' could go either way and its a complete gamble of the airline & government to do so - its either guna make people realise obesity is a huge problem and get them to realise that something needs to be done, or it will stop people going on planes all together!

And what are they going to do??

Make an extra section for everyone to get weighing, their height measured, and their waists measured and have a mock chair for people to sit in before going through security??

This is a fing joke!

Hi Summergurl, now that a war has started over charging extra for plane seats...maybe sending in the Marines is a good idea!! My son is 27 and has been a Royal Marine for 5 years, based in Plymouth, (lives in Plympton) just came back from Afghanistan.. So very proud of him!

Sorry folks for getting off the subject again!

Cool supa - am in plymouth too!

I think thats a good point though - those with muscles are generally heavy and therefore their bmi would be high so charging for bmi is absurd!

feel sorry for ppl who have to go thru that embarrasment its wrong i agree about not making your fat problems a problem for your kids you should keep them healthy my babies couldnt be healthier and thats cause i dont want them to have to go thru being called names and being bullied at school like i did i was fat at school and didnt lose weight till i had my first child then when i had second i piled it all back on and more, but it really wouldnt be fair for them to go thru that at the airline because the parents have let them eat junk as for the airline i think they see fat ppl as a cash cow pls excuse the expression!!!

I think its vile that your bad mouthing parents of overweight children.. so are your parents scum cos your overweight?
x

Hi Cat

While I don't think my parents are scum because I am overweight I did blame them to some degree for allowing me to get fat as a kid when I knew no better.

I do think its down to people not having the education about obesity etc when I was a kid but I really don't think there is any need for kids to be obese now.. unless there is some medical problem.

I certainly cannot understand an overweight parent now in these times to allow their children become hugely overweight in fact I would go so far as to say its child abuse.

Will you allow your babs to be overweight if you can help it at all?? I certainly wouldn't if I had kids. Not knowing the awfulness attached to being overweight and trying to lose it!!!

Gen xx

i so agree with you gen no good mother in this day and age will do that to their babies my mom and dad didnt force me to eat my mum cooked good healthy meals it was the choice's i made at 13 onwards and i was not really fat anyway but it was still enough to be bullied at school i was about 11 stone in my last yr at school but it was enough to be called fatty no way will my babies go thru that i want them to live life to the full not just exsist trying to blend in like i did

Attitude! Scum is a very harsh word and im actually quite offended by the manner you have approached this.

My mum put me on a diet when i was 7/8 got me to a healthy weight and i stayed that way untill i was 18 when i piled the weight on - it was MY concious choice to eat and drink myself to obesity. I dont blame my parents. They are the ones that put me on the diet in the first place, made me see just how healthy i was when i look back now.
