sore legs/energy

this will sound like a very silly question but it is worryin me a little and my CDC is in the canaries until 23rd.

My work has moved buildings and now my office is on the 3rd floor. This obviously means stairs and the stairs are actually becoming a bit of a problem. I literally get half way up them and i think I am dying, the burn in my calfs is like that of 20 minutes step arobics and i am getting quite out of breath too.

Is this normal?? Before the diet I could manage stairs no problems.

At a guess I'd say this was due to the reduced calories you're taking in, compared to what you used to have. However, I'm not an expert so I'm sure someone with more knowledge than me will come along and help you further.

I was guessing it was less calories/fat burning sooner. probably doesn't help that I wear heels alot.

i have the same problem, im a postwoman and on day 6, today was my 1st day back since starting cd and i was bushed it was so hard as i deliver to flats i used to be tired but not like that. im hoping the more i do it the easier it will become!

Hi purplepixie,
I'm the same I seem to have no energy at all and soon start feeling weak after vigorous housework and gardening. I'm also used to walking everywhere but even that is tiring me out! I hope it passes :snoopyhouse:

I've been through this with my osteopath. What has been happening is that your legs have gradually been getting stronger in order to hold up and support your excess weight. Now that you are getting lighter, your legs are actually getting weaker in contrast. In addition to this, you are probably getting some backache because your posture will automatically improve (you will be standing up straighter because you haven't got such a big belly sticking out at the front!) - this means that your body is having to 'rearrange' itself, in terms of muscles/joints etc.

For the legs, my osteopath recommends Pilates which is a very good strengthening form of exercise, but not a cardio-vascular one (which is the last thing you want on a VLCD - it would flatten you). For general backache, the best thing is a visit to an osteopath, chiropractor or deep-tissue masseur - whichever is your choice (mine would be osteopathy, but that's because they've saved my life so many times over the years). They will be able to manipulate you to accommodate the changes your body is going through (I'm expecting to pay mine a visit about once a month for this).

Reading here about the vigorous exercise that people are doing - I think you need to slow down? You just won't have the energy and it will crease you (my osteopath recommends building back up slowly as I progress through the diet, but that's way off for me as I'm still on SS!). There will always be those who disagree with this, but that's what I've been told and I'm sticking to it!

I've been getting backache too! now I know why

I've got exactly the same problem with my legs. It's getting easier when I'm out and about-ie walking somewhere, but I try to do the step class on the Wii and my legs feel like they are going to seize up! The burn is terrible!

My back is fine, it is just my legs on the stairs. I am starting callaetics next week. that should be gentle

Oh god me too! Thought it was just TOTM realted (prob is in part)

That and carrying 2L of water, lap top, reference books, uni papaerwork and 2 bags of shopping home today from uni.

I used to always try and take the stairs and get off the tube early to get a bit of exercise... but since the diet its been a real hardship walking. Even getting from the car to the station requires too much effort and energy than I can handle!

Perhaps this ought to be a sticky? It seems to affect all of us! :)

My flat is up three flights of stairs, no lift available. They've always left me puffing a little at the top but now not only that but my calfs have the burn like i've done a workout at the top and the last few steps i really struggle at times to push myself up them!! Sounds like i'm well fat n unfit now lol... x

I'll agree with that too. I'm always concerned when people spend hours down the gym on SS or SS+. Research that I've read has shown that this can reduce lean mass and slow the metabolism.

Much better to be gentle on ourselves. Go walking or a gentle swim, and add the rest as we go up the plans.

Doesn't help people who are active at work, but I always ask people what they do, because you need a plan to suit.

i wish i could do that hun, i just finished work and am cream crackered x

I have a very hectic cleaning job 2 days a week and a gardening job 1 day, and I'm absloutley worn out when I've finished

I sit on my fat a$$ most of the day at work but my office is on the top floor and if ihave clients visiting our interview offices are on the ground floor. I wish we had a lift.
