What to do abt diet on holiday?

Im off to tenerife next week, and am really getting myself in a tizzle about what to eat when im there. Going with hubby, little man, my nana, gt aunt and uncle (all over 70).

They are very set in their ways and really wouldnt understand if I tried to explain atkins to them at all. My nana knows im on a diet - I tend to phone her when walking to the gym and she has mentioned a few times that im not to 'be on that silly diet' when on hols.

I can probably get away with saying I cant eat bread (I do actually have a bit of a wheat intolerance ive realised) but I have a feeling I am still going to be expected to eat non atkins things.

I guess I can try and not eat chips, bread etc etc but I dont want to upset the oldies.

Have a wedding to goto the week after I get bk so need to fit in my nice pretty dress I bought a couple of weeks ago.

Really panicking, as the last 2 times I went on hols I put on half a stone in a wk. :wave_cry:

Also.. I normally have these for breakfast..

Calories: 160, Calories From Fat: 70, Total Fat: 8gm, Saturated Fat: 5gm, Cholesterol: 2mg, Sodium: 65mg, Potassium: 90mg, Total Carbohydrate: 14gm, Dietary Fiber: 6gm, Sugars: 0gm, Protein: 13gm

Should I still have these rather than cereal, or toast. (No cooked brekkies as far as I know) or if I am out of ketosis anyway would these just make it worse as they are fairly high in fat.

Omg im so stressed about this.

Hmm, if it were me Rach then if Atkins was out of the question, I think I would have to just do a sensible calorie counted week. So try to eat as much fruit and veg and stay away from the evil chips.

The evil chips and the evil fudge cake!! :copon:

I can try and have lots of salads etc but I spose the problem is you dont always know whats in things when you eat out.

Im off to torviscas on the random chance that anyone has been there and knows of nice places to go. :p

At least in that part of the world there will be some lovely fish on the menu. Try shark if you get the chance. I first tried it in Gran Canaria and it's another meaty fish. And the sword fish and tuna should be good.

It's always a risk with salads, but generally you should be ok I think.

Am very jealous!!! Would love be to off to the sun for a week.

Ooh shark, how random. What does that come like? Pan fried? xx

Yes normally. I think they pan fry in olive oil or butter, but I might have had it in garlic as well. It's yummy! Especially as their fish is always really fresh. Oh my mouth is watering.

Personally I'd stay on Atkins - just don't tell them! Depends what you're like but for me, it's sooo hard to get back on the wagon - and for most people I think. Once you let your subconscious know you can break the diet for something special you might find you're breaking it for every party or birthday or anniversary that comes along and then it gets pointless.
Given their ages, could you just tell them you're cutting back on starchy food - that line would work for my gran! They probably know nothing about Atkins so if you're eating veg and salad with your fish and meat, and having cheese they won't realise it's that "silly diet". It will probably be much easier to stick to Atkins than to successfully go low-cal out there. As you say you never know what's in most things and it's easier to work out what's low-carb than low-cal. Lots of steaks, fish, seafood and chicken with big salads- they'll never know you're dieting - then tell them you're too stuffed to even think about dessert after your huge steak! x

I think thats probably for the best IB, I am looking forward to lots of fish!
My big concern is breakfast, which I understand to be say cereals, toast, jamsmfruit, oj, etc etc nothing of which is really allowed.. should I just pack myself my normal brekkie bars do u think?

I don't know the place you mentioned but usually any big hotel or resort has sliced meats and cheeses as part of the cold continental breakfast, and those would be ok. Depending on the type of hotel, they might also do smoked fish and/english breakfast type stuff if they do hot breakfast in which case you can have sausage, bacon, scrambled egg etc. Fried mushrooms - yum!

Fab fab. I have never been there, but the oldies own timeshare so we are off for a cheapy week in the sun.

Just need to remember the dress I gotta get into when I get back.. that should keep my on track as hubby already said he wont be buying another one in a bigger size if I dont. :rotflmao: xx

The dress will keep you motivated! Glad you have found a solution that works for you.

I agree rach, I'd eat lots of fish, meat and salad, no Bread, Potato or cake.

Rach, I wouldn't even mention diet to them, and appear to order normally, but only eat the meat / fish / green veggies, shove the potatoe and bread round a bit. They won't notice! As for brekky, every second place does full English :) Enjoy yourself!
