Personal trainer

Splodge

Never give up trying....!
I am going to get a PT to motivate me at home. I am far too ashamed to go down the gym or even for a walk and need someone to help me start exercising slowly and correctly. I am so unfit its scary.

Great idea! Tell us how you get on :)

Hi,
I would be really interested to see how that goes as I feel exactly the same ! The cost of it has put me off even though I don't have a clue how much it would cost. I could cope with a nice friendly trainer but wouldn't want some honed, perfect bod turning up !

I wish I could afford that, good luck I'm sure you will get great results through it.

The ones at the gym I go to are something like £10 for half an hour which doesn't sound too bad but it soon mounts up doesn't it

my mate whose a personal trainer did a week with me and iate only ww meals .............on 22 points and lost ......................................................................................................................................................

To be fair most personal trainers are going to have a good body. In order to be credible, you have to look the part as well as know your stuff (not looking the part suggests that you either don't know your stuff or don't believe it enough to follow it yourself - like being a skinny chef :D).

At my gym it is £30 an hour, too much ontop of membership but i would love to do it.

I have a PT at my local gym...he's 35.00 per hour, but he's fantastic and really motivates me and makes me push myself that bit further!!

He's very fit...has skimpy lil shorts on...and looks like Boris Becker!! Yum Yum!!!

I wonder if it would be worth finding a PT that is still in school or has just graduated and needs new clients right away. Maybe there would be some sort of discount offered. I'm thinking maybe I could contact some local colleges that have fitness degrees and find out. Worth a try?

Hiya - hope you don't mind me butting in, not being argumentative, just playing Devil's advocate.

Not every trainer has a "good body" This shouldn't mater anyway - finding someone that you're comfortable is the most important thing. The 2 most popular trainers at my gym - who are excellent at what they do and are VERY encouraging(their classes ALWAYS fill up straight away) - are "well built" girls.

I must admit that I am guilty of this thinking too or I would be up there teaching right now!! The thing stopping me is that I don't look like a fitness instructor at the minute - which knocks my confidence no end - I know that I am contradicting myself but I tend not to judge others and go WAAAY overboard on myself!!

At the end of the day you do not know the personal history of the PT - they are human and you don't always know the reason why they do not "look the part". Just like us, there could be factors around their appearance.

For example - 6 months of chemo and steroids can make a person balloon . Muscles and lungs also take a battering so getting back to fitness is a struggle and lowered muscle mass means that metabolism isn't quite what it was- this does not mean that that person is not capable of of being a fitness instructor as they are qualified. I defy anyone to say that they do not know their stuff or don't believe in it.

Just another perspective to consider

Like I say, the most important thing is that you feel comfortable with the person

Good luck

Ails xx

I started personal training in October 2007 and have lost over 3 stone! Like you Splodge there was no way I was going to join a gym. Have tried that in the past and just feel so big next to some of those young girls! I also find for some reason that people love to stare in gyms and why have all those mirrors..no I don't want to see my flabby bits wobbling when I'm on the treadmill!(and I'm sure no one else does!)

My trainer David is really professional and so helpful. Without him I know I wouldn't exercise. The first few weeks were quite tough getting used to it, but the weight really started coming off and I was noticing a huge change to how I felt after the first few weeks. I feel much healthier and happier than on any diet I have tried.

The last time I tried a liquid diet (March 2005) I felt so ill and energy-drained all the time. I am much happier with how I look and feel now.

I would definitely recommend my trainer to anyone if they are interested. I think he only covers Surrey and London, (I'm not sure) but my trainer's site is Motivate Personal Training

Having got in to exercise, I find that I still watch my food but I can enjoy more things, even wine and occassionally chocolate! :p

Hey Gina, congrats on losing that weight through exercise. I would love to do more exercise myself, but like many just don't seem to have that get-up-and-go! I would love to have a personal trainer. Let me know how you get on.
