Atkins and surgery?

Hi
I'm booked for a keyhole op at the end of April. I was planning to Atkins up to and after the op... but there are some other threads on here saying that you must be out of ketosis before having a general anaesthetic and can't resume for 3 months after. Anyone have any idea if this is true?
Obviously I'm going to email the surgeon and check but would like to know if anyone else has heard of this. I can't imagine why you would have to wait 3 months to resume? And I was under the impression that lots of Weight-loss surgery people go onto VLCDs before surgery anyway so they'd be in ketosis. Actually I go into ketosis really easily so if they starve me for a day in advance of surgery I'd be in ketosis anyway. Bit confused - this will prey on my mind until the surgeon gets back to me.

I read up on this a bit for you, and it seems that it is fine, so long as you let them know, then when they find the ketones, they won't think something is wrong. Good luck with the surgery!

Thanks TT. I'm nervous of the surgery but quite excited too as it should hopefully cure a long-term problem and improve my quality of life enormously. So in a strange way, I can hardly wait.

Really? When I had my hip op I wasn't allowed to eat for 24 hours prior to the op, that would have put me in ketosis I'd have thought.

That's exactly what I figure - it only takes me about 1 day to go into ketosis. When I was pregnant they were constantly checking my pee for various things and sometimes I'd be in ketosis then because I'd missed just one meal (usually due to morning sickness - I wasn't daft enough to try to be in ketosis while pregnant).

Agreed IB, and why not ketosis for 3 months after? Very puzzling.

OH suspects it's self-preservation move on CD's part to avoid getting sued if anyone on VLCD has problems after surgery. Sounds fairly sensible. Apparently Cambridge only let you resume within 3 months of surgery if you get a signed agreement from doc, which would then stop any comeback on them if you're not ready to resume. I guess every surgery and patient are different and it's more practical for CD/LL to apply a blanket rule and be on the safe side. In the end, I'll go with whatever the docs advise for me personally and for my specific op.

ah yes, I'm sure you are right love.
