can anyone please tell me how or where i can find out what is a senisble daily 'carb' amount to aim for and any other tips you might be willing to share.

Thanks all !!

Hi, I think the best way for you is to look at the GI diet maybe if you don't want to do the full Atkins.

This really depends on whether you are aiming to go into ketosis or not. Really anything under 100g of carbs will bring on at least some level of ketosis, but most put it in the 0-50g bracket.

If you don't work well in ketosis, make sure you are going for at least something like 115g carbs upward.

The recommended percentage for carbs in a non-low carb diet would be about 55% depending on what you read :D

So if you want to reduce carbs, go for something lower until you find what is working well for you.

Remember to get your carbs from good sources though...fruit, veg etc :)

Hope that helps.

Hiya, I have a book by dr charles clarke (the high protein diet, amazon has it still i think) and he recommends keeping to 40-60g a day. There's loads of receipes in the second half of the book. He explains the sciencey bit at that start in an easy to understand way.:)

South Beach diet is only £1 in Pundland just now - not as low as Atkins but still quite low carb

I have always liked the look of south beach and the GI diet, I just don't understand how you can have that many carbs and be in ketosis?

Having said that I know it works 'cos a friend of mine has lost loads on the GI diet and she looks really good.

Cos you aren't Jim. Neither of them are ketogenic diets.

I suppose with certain choices, you could make them so, but it's not the intention for people on the above to go into ketosis.

Ah, thanks KD. So you are losing because you are eating less then?

Ah, thanks KD. So you are losing because you are eating less then?

Basically, yes. With the low GI and South beach, the idea is that good carbs stabilise your blood sugars and you don't get the swings of hunger etc. So you end up eating less. That's the theory anyway.

works for some. Didn't work too well for me when I was bigger, as hunger had very little to do with what I ate. I just ate for any reason.

I just ate for any reason

I can identify with that KD, I had no weight problems in the Army, for obvious reasons, but when I left in '93 after 25 years I piled on the weight at a frightening rate. I went from 13 1/2 stone to over 25 stone in 8 years, and that despite trying all sorts of diets. Then I found Atkins thank god.

I went from 13 1/2 stone to over 25 stone in 8 years,

Wow! Impressive :D

and that despite trying all sorts of diets. Then I found Atkins thank god.
Certainly was your answer wasn't it.

I remember the first time I did Atkins. It was before it became popular here. My friend returned from the states where it was 'the' diet to be on and lent me the book

I loved it. Felt fantastic. It really annoyed me when people criticized it, saying I would be ill, because I had never felt better.

Peer pressure won in the end :( I was younger, and less confident. Also, there wasn't the info on the internet so a I didn't know so much about it at the time. Was a leap of faith, squashed by well meaning, but ignorant friends.

Well...clever friends really, but ignorant about ketosis and nutrition

I know KD. I never told anyone I was on Atkins, I just said I wasn't eating bread or potato's. That fooled them :D

The weight gain was stupid really, I went from a very active lifestyle, running every day, Rugby training, squash and swimming on a daily basis to the usual civvie corporate lifestyle, i.e working 16 hour days, business lunches and no exercise.

No surprise there. :(

LOL. Like when I went on Cambridge. Just told them I wasn't eating :D :D

For the more sensitive, I just said I was having everything I needed but no more. Strangely enough, though I felt fab on Atkins the first time around, ketosis didn't suit me much after that:(

Don't know why as I know most people feel great in ketosis.

I did KD, That energy boost after the Atkins Flu was amazing. I'm not in ketosis any more obviously, but boy do I have loads and loads of energy, more than the youngsters who work for me frankly.
