Net carbs - this can't be right?

Hi
I have been looking at some meal bars and so on on various low carb online shops. The sites show the net carbs figure for each bar. I did Atkins a while back and think that when calculating net carbs you could deduct fibre and polyols from the total carbs figure.
However some of the websites I looked at seem to be deducting fructose and lactose to arrive at the net carb figure they advertise. That can't be correct surely - fructose and lactose are sugar just as much as sucrose or glucose. Low-carb doesn't usually allow milk and that's because of the lactose isn't it?
I don't have an Atkins book anymore - I lost about 3 by lending them out and never getting them back - so could someone tell me if I'm right. Would love to be wrong as just think of all the milk and fruit I could have but I reckon I'm right sadly.

HI IB, Jim will be your man for this one. Sorry I haven't replied to you last email. It looks like low carb is the right option until you can think about getting more packs. I I am loving my low carb evening meals and got some great recipe ideas from here. Jim's curry recipe is great.

Anyway, I am sure that Jim will be along soon to help on this one. :D

Could you give us an example?

American products list the fibre as part of the carb section so you need to deduct this off the total carb number to get your net carbs. UK products list fibre totally seperate and not included at all with total carbs so you dont deduct firber for these, just go with the total including any starches and sugars.

I cant see why fructose would be deducted, but any artificial sweetners may be - maitol, isomalt etc etc. xx
xx

I agree with you IB, they are cheating, personally I never touched them.

Thanks. I think some of the websites are quite unscrupulous and will put wrong figures up either because they don't care or because they just want to get you to buy the stuff.

Can't decide whether to buy any low-carb snacks or not. i suspect they become the start of a slippery slope for me which ends in diet failure but they are soooo useful for being out and about.

I always used to try and plan ahead and have some legal stuff, hard boiled eggs or mini home made meat balls. Those pepperoni's are a handy legal snack as well.

I used to have mini peperamis in London but you can't buy them out here. Nor things like mini babybels - I used to find them quite handy. They do sell Biltong here - I don't really like that but I might have to get used to it!

Ahhh Biltong! I was born in Zimbabwe and lived for 15 years in South Africa. As kids we lived on the stuff! What about droe wors?? Thats really nice too.

OOHHHHH Boer sausahe, yummy I love it.
