Does anyone suffer with a bulging disc..

Back On CD.......
Hiya, :D

Not sure where to post this so people with read it but....
Wanted to know if anyone suffers with a bulging disc, I was in a car accident 3 years ago June 3rd this yr which left me with a bulging disc in my neck with affects me every day. I have tried everything since my accident from physio to manual traction to acupunture to steroid injections & nothing has worked, Every day I experience pain in my neck, back & shoulders, I pop pills every day & apply heat spray & patches to try & ease it.. Its a nightmare. It affects whatever job I am doing at the time

My claim is still on-going, but looks as if its going to get sorted this yr as it needs to go to court before 3 yrs is up. I have been to see a medical expert & he is saying that basically I am going to be like this for the rest of my life if I was going to get better I would of by now.
Even the neurologist I am seeing at the moment agrees that I will have symptoms forever.
Which isnt good news for me considering I am only 29. The thought of me living life everyday in the future like I am now really upsets me.

I am a hairdresser by trade & before my accident I could do hairdressing all day with no problem now If I do 2 haircuts back to back I am in agony. Therefore I know I wouldnt be able to go back into hairdressing in the future..

The medical expert is saying that my injury shouldnt affect me getting employment in the future which has totally pissed me off as he has met me once, what does he know. Its affected every job I have been in since my accident. I cant sit for a long time, I cant stand for a long time. My muscles just seize up which leaves me in pain. I am currently unemployed at the moment which I hate. I find it so degrading going & signing your name for £57 a week. Didnt realise how hard it is to find a job.

My solicitor sent me a letter this morning saying that the claim insurers will only pay for 1 medical report therefore if I want a 2nd opinion I will have to pay for it myself. :(

I am fed up with it all, its been going on for ages, I am not bothered about the money as I would rather have my health back, but there is no chance of that, when my claim is sorted this yr, my injuries will be no different I will be still struggling day by day with the pain.
There is people I know out there who have conned insurers, playing on there so called injuries, been nothing wrong with them but got a canny payout for nowt, then there is me who has a genuine problem & will probably get next to nothing..

Sorry for my moan, it just really upsets me.

If anyone else suffers with a problem I would love to hear from you.

Kel

Hiya,

Im sorry to hear the problems you are having kelly, I kind of know what you are feeling as I had horrendous disc problems for 2 years, loads of painkillers that didnt work and eventually had an op to remove both discs in my lower back as i couldnt cope anymore.
Is surgery an option at all? I know it carries risks but I definately found it worked, as soon as the op was over, bar wound pain, I was pain free and have been ever since.
What does the neurologist say?

Hi Rachels, thanks for your reply.

Do u know where my original post has gone thats a mystery?

Neurologist says that surgery wouldnt really solve the problem.
Its a nightmare as I have tried most things, I suffer with quite alot of tension headaches also from the injury..

Hi,
I have had a problem for 12 years. Dr said if he operate it might leave me in a wheelchair or incontinent!!!!!
Mine is in my lower back, so hopefully getting the weight off will help.

Sorry to hear you are in pain. Have you tried acupuncture?

No exercise apart from gentle walking....or so they said. I do, do a bit more, but not much. I am very, very careful.

Sorry to hear that you are bad as i know that it is a pain to walk, to sit, to move and to lie :sigh::sigh:. Not leaving any other options:cry:

Hi Kelly

I know you have already tried quite a lot of things, but have you tried Pilates?

Pilates is not just another form of exercise, it was originally designed as a rehabilitation programme for people with serious back and neck injuries following, sports and car accidents etc.

I do Pilates, but I do not do the floor Pilates, I have a Pilates machine called a 'reformer' which supports your body better as you do most of the exercises laying down on a moving platform. By laying down this supports your spine and neck completely and allows you to strengthen your core muscles which supports your whole skeleton, which in turn re-aligns your spine and neck back to how it should be.

I got my machine from QVC and on the link below you can click on video links where you will be introduced to Marjolein Brugman who is now a Pilates expert following a very bad car accident and she was told by her doctor that she would probably never walk again as her pelvis was completely detached from her hip joint, but through Pilates she was able to rehabilitate and the plus side of the Pilates was a lovely toned, trim figure too!

Marjolein normally comes to QVC about one a month and she is next due to appear on 22nd June, if you have a chance, please try and tune in to her shows as she will give you so much information about how good Pilates is for correcting spine and neck problems, in fact you often get people ringing in to the show with incredible success stories - people that were even due to go to surgery due to incredible pain in their backs etc., but since doing Pilates the pain has gone and they have not had to have surgery.

I won't say the Pilates machines are cheap as they are not, but normally when they air on QVC, they sometimes have what they call 'easy payments' which means you can pay for the item over a few months and once you have paid for it you will never have to pay out again - you have it for life!

I would not be without my Pilates machine and I can also tell you that it has changed my body shape unbelievably, I am even an inch taller as the machine has realigned my spine and I am now walking taller. I mainly got it as I was suffering with lower back problems and alot of neck tension, my shoulders used to end up next to my ears  - but all that has gone now.

Sorry I have rattled on a bit, but I am so enthusiastic about this machine and from previous people ringing in to the show with their success stories, I really believe this machine could help you Kelly

Hi there, have you been referred for any physiotherapy? I know a physio would tend to see a patient post surgical intervention. It may be worth doing if your not going to have surgery. They would be able to look at your function and try to improve day to day things. :)

Hiya, :D

I have actually bought one of these machines from QVC and tried it for 30 days, I did enjoy using it & so did the rest of the family but to be honest I still live at home & had no space to put it, with being a BS@H Consultant too I had so space in my room to put it for products so I had to send it back, me mam wasnt amused as it was like a piece of the furniture in the living room for 30 days..

Hiya,

I was referred to a physio after my accident & I tried it 2-3 times a week, sometimes even 4 times a week as my physio used to say if I was in agony come straight in after work & he will ease the pain for me but after loads of treatment they even tried acupuncture on me, manual traction, etc, they felt they couldnt help me anymore hence why I got referred to James Cook Hospital for steroid injections for the pain..

So Although I went to Physio for nearly 2 years every week I would feel better after my treatment but when I went back to my every day activities my neck/back would flare up & the pain starts again till the next visit to the physio so in a way the physio was just wasting their time..

Same 1 of my relatives wasnt a physio. lol

1 Of my mates B/f's is a specialist in sports therapy so I was thinking of giving that a try, anything is worth a try at the moment..

I would give ANYTHING to be back to normal again b4 the accident..

Kelly that's a real shame - I am sure it would work wonders for you - perhaps you can manage to get another one in the future!

I can only think of one thing to suggest as a longterm option. A TENS machine. It works by desensatising the nerves OR shuting the pain-gate.... depends which settings you use. I used one for a while for hip pain.. but I've had a hip replacement now so I'm fine :) It didn't stop the pain completely for me... but it reduced it from 'tooth-abcess-intense' 24/7 to a dull persistant ache that I could live with. Have you had your Dr refer you to a hospital Pain Management clinic? They usually have a couple of TENS machines for trying it out to see if it suits you? Might be worth a try?

I too was in a car accident 25 years ago, and from whiplash I too suffer from buldging disc in my neck, it basically has turned into arthritis throughout my neck, but I learn to just grin and bear it.

Hi Kelly, I too went through something similar 10 years ago. My own insurance company "kindly " took on the case representing both me and the foreign lorry driver. They paid a doctor to say i was lying about the pain which I still get, got people to pose as market researchers and videotape me covertly in my own home and because i managed to pick up my small child to cross the road said that it was all a fabrication. I had root block injections, facet joint injections, accupuncture, antidepressants, high strength pain killers and nothing helped much.I have since come off the drugs and feel better for it . If you take too many painkillers then you can get a headache from them. Keep yourself as occupied as you can find a new career that you will enjoy and hopefully your body will release its own endorphins to help you cope. I too was told that surgery was not an option as this has a rebound effect on the vertebrae next to the op site and will eventually cause further problem. I hope you can sort out your claim but personally I believe that insurance companies are ********s and are only happy when they get money from you and not the other way round. unfortunately you are one of those who tries to get on with your life and they may stitch you up for it the only other option I would suggest is alternative therapies.

Hiya Hun,

I can't believe your story with the insurance company, thats shocking.

My friend suffers with severe back pain & she has been on Fentynal pain patches, has been on the for 3 yrs, she thinks they are fab so gonna ask my doctor foe some of them as I only went last week & got more tablets, Diazapam, Sick of taking pills.

Dont you take pain killers now?
