I have joined the gym and am finding that if i'm not too tired i'm exercising every day. Don't think i'm overdoing it. Am either swimming, going on the treadmill or going on the bike. They are aware that i'm on a vlcd and i have adjusted my water intake accordingly. I don't want to go and get weighed next week to be told i've only lost a pound as the last two weeks i've lost thirteen pounds and would be quite disheartened. I'm also doing some weights to tone myself up. Will it have a massive effect on my losses?;)

Hi
you sound really focused which is brill. I was advised though for the first two weeks to just take it easy, increase my walking but keep away from the gym. It's to allow the body to adjust and also to help with the fatigue. The first time I did CD i went hell for leather in the gym and my weightloss suffered but this time I am not back there until I have lost 2 stone which will hopefully be next week. I have however started swimming and walking more. I appreciate alot of it is down to the individual so don't worry, the main point being your head is in the right place to help with this diet.
Good luck:)

Hi Busybee I was just wondering why did the exercise when you were on CD affect your weightloss? I always though exercise increased weightloss xxx

I believe it has something to do with your body trying to store fat, to burn when exercising.

Oooooohhhh I get it now thanks for letting me know matt x

I am thinking of starting up some mild aerobics and pilates after I have completed my second week, if only to help me manage the daily stresses of life. I do hope it doesn't slow down the weight loss too much:(

To Fran and anyone else maby try begginers yoga I used to do yoga myself and am thinkink of getting back into it as its gentle and toning xxxx

Yoga is great and yes Mat you were right about the body trying to store fat for burning.

As CD is already low cal you dont need to be burning fat with too much cardio as the diet and your body are already doing this. However it is good to incorporate this at an easy an manageable level so that when your weight loss journey is complete you already have (effortlessly) begun a method to aiding in your maintenance (exercise).

I would suggest 3 sessions in the gym or 2 with 15mins cardio, 5mins abs and stretching and 25mins of light to moderate weight to create muscle. If your body is already burning the fat then you want to be toning so that you have a lovely toned shape by the time you move up the steps. Then 1 session of swimming (lengthening and toning).

I exercise regularly and find that 4-5 sessions a week for 30 - 45 mins dont seem like a chore or boring and then I give up or loose interest. When I exercise regulary and I'm at goal I can usually eat and drink as I please (healthy with alcohol or a weekly sweet). When I do indulge it takes 2 days of being stern with my eating for my body to go back to goal weight.

Hope i've helped.

Your weight loss is not "slowed down" when you are exercising because the body is storing fat. I have worked myself up since week three and I can do 40 minutes of cardio on the cross trainer and bikes easily. I am also using alot of the gym machines to weight train. I however used to go to the gym before CD so my body is used to it. My advice to you is not to expect big losses from CD, expectation breeds disappointment which may make you want to pack it in. The average loss on CD is 3-4lbs a week. When you exercise with CD because you do not have glycogen stores your body has to burn up fat, sometimes there is a build up of lactic acid and this will make you retain water and this may be one of the reasons why the weight loss will not show on the scales as much. Plus when you are toning muscle the salt concentration in the muscle is altered and this may lead to water retention too. Most importantly if you are toning you are building muscle and despite the fact that you are losing fat, the weight loss may not be as huge as there is an increase in muscle. Exercise is brilliant and if you exercise whilst you diet it helps you not to end up with lots of saggy skin as you are toning each time you go in. Just listen to your body, don't go on if you feel you cannot.

The most important thing as well to note is with exercise it may slow the weight loss down on the scales but it helps in changing your body shape so there will always be a loss when you use a tape measure. Muscle has a higher base metabolic rate than fat so the more muscle you have the faster you burn fat. All the best.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to share your experiences and advice. All the best :)

I started on CD on 6th Jan and lost 6, 4.5, 2.3, 2.7 & 3.2lbs..... I have been going to my gym for 18mths and was determined to continue. Because my weight loss wasn't as high as expected (whilst excercising) my CDC advised me to stop the gym (I thought she was bonkers!)... that resulted in the lesser 2.3lb result... the following week I did slightly better (back to gym) and this week even better (gym 3 x 30min sessions). I do better with exercise but that may be because I am quite good muscle tone already? The explanation above was very good, and does make sense, thanks. I'm now reconciled to lower losses than others, and console myself that hopefully by losing it at a slower rate, I won't be saggy at the end of it!
