Pilates?

Hi everyone I have decided to start Pilates this week (actually conned into going by extremely skinny friend) and I don't really know anything about it. I would be very greatful for any pearls of wisdom that you might have!

Thanks

I like Pilates. The classes I've got to have been mat work, like very slow and tiny movements of your muscles that you hold, and you breathe differently. I've had a couple of good Pilates instructors, but my fav left the gym where I go and I don't like the replacement. It really helps you to tone your core, especially.

Thanks Christie thats really helpful - I didn't have a clue what was involved but I'm not so nervous anymore!

Hey, i'm also thinking of going to pilates classes so you'll have to let us know how you get on! Have Fun :) XX

Hello everyone.

My wife uses a Darcey Bussell dvd, Pilates For Life.

She also goes to a class, but I just thought I'd suggest it as an introducion. My missus thinks it's ace.

I wouldn't recommend using a DVD as an introduction - best to start off by going to a class so that you have the benefit of an instructor to correct your technique, then you can safely do it at home with a DVD.

Point taken kate, in honesty I was suggesting that people had a look at it first.
I would imagine signing up to a class can be a bit much for some.
So having a look before would give you a general idea if it was something you'd fancy or not.

It was just a thought.

Oh sure thing Rennes, I wasn't having a go. I only butted in because it's so important to get the technique correct with Pilates, especially for exercises that target the back. It can be pretty intense and doing it repeatedly with poor technique can cause injury. And you only get one back and you gotta look after it! ;)

i went to Pilates for 16 weeks. Found it great, esp for stomach and mind. but i think u need to do it more then once a week so when you get use to it, its good to get a dvd maybe

I have the "Pilates: Weight Loss For Dummies" DVD, and I have done it about 3 times now... I must admit that I found it really confusing to start with, but I remember feeling the same to start with about a general aerobics video I use too, and it was just a case of the more you did it, the easier the poses and actions get and the more you get out of it :)

I am finding it much easier just after 3 goes :) so I would recommend Pilates certainly, the work out section works up a sweat on me, and then you tone after. I find pilates really helps with my posture too and breathing and general way I hold myself :)
