CD adverse effects

Last year I tried the CD for 3 weeks. Unfortuatley I had to stop because I felt very ill. Cant remember what my weight loss was but it was good for the first week. The second and third weeks were a blurr. My mouth and tongue were sore and felt like they were on fire. My breath was awful like acetone. I was drinking litres and litres of water and still extremely thirsty. As soon as I stopped the diet and ate and drank normally the sore mouth and tongue went and I recovered. Has anyone else ever had this. My counsellor had not heard of this problem before.

I wasn't very thirsty, but I did have a sore mouth that felt like it was on fire! I remember using the same description myself.

The acetone breath is normal and is a side effect of ketosis. I do always feel thirsty on the diet but IMO that's a good thing as it forces me to keep drinking, which is a good thing on a VLCD. Never experienced the sore tongue though. I sometimes find I feel a bit light-headed, particularly when I stand up, but it doesn't tend to last more than a couple of weeks...

... I think when you first start a VLCD it can confuse your body a bit. But it's a safe diet and if you give your body time to get used to it, most side effects tend to disappear. Obviously ketosis has side effects which will likely be present the whole time you're on the diet, as this a chemical process and as long as it's going on in your body (which should be the whole time you're on the diet) you'll feel the effects.

I have exactley what you have described. My mouth and tongue and the back of my throat feel like they are on fire. Its really very painful and it gets worse at night because i cant drink any water. I even had a little cry last night about this because it was so painful.

I have had this everytime i have tried to restart CD and its made me give up the diet everytime (i didnt get it the first time). I have mentioned it to my CDC and she has never heard of it but she did mention that it might go away after a few weeks into the diet.

I am just finishing week 2 of my restart and i am still experiencing the pain. I have slipped up a few times in these 2 weeks mainly due to the painful mouth but i just kept going.

I am going to try using some mouthwash and see if that helps at all but all i can reccomend is to keep drinking the water. I find this helps alot.

But i only drink warm water on the diet (i know it sounds disgusting and sometimes it is) otherwise i will get a bad chest from cold water (even tap). I'm not sure if this helps but my water has started to taste really really sweet which i think (and hoping) is due to ketosis.

I have also started to drink green tea first thing in the morning (when i wake up with a painful mouth and throat) and it helps to get rid of the pain.

I really am hoping that it will go away in a few weeks because it is very painful and i just want to eat to take the pain away.

I will continue SS untill i feel like i cant take anymore pain then i will move on to SS+ if i have too.

I have also found that my teeth have been hurting too, so i dont know whats going on.

Anyway, sorry for the long reply but when i read your post i knew exactely what you were on about and i just wanted to share my experience.

I am only putting up with the pain because i am desperate to lose this weight and i know CD is the only way i can do it.

I will let you know how i get on with the deit and the sore mouth.

xx
