home made vs shop bought pastry

Hi...thinking of making some mince pies - anyone got any idea whether home made pastry would be better or worse than shop bought ready to roll pastry...I'm guessing home made would be better but if there's not much in it I might buy ready made....they're not all for me!! mostly non-dieters!! and the convenience of not making it myself would be better....what do you think guys?

I'm also guessing that they've got to be better than shop bought made mince pies........

Making your own pastry isn't hard, especially if you have a food processor. But the ready to roll stuff is also very good. If you really don't want to make it yourself, then the ready made stuff is good actually.

My daughters and I made mince pies last night and tonight. We used jus-rol shortcrust pastry and they were lovely. Just take it out the fridge about 1/2hr before you need it. Also, roll it out quite thin, about 3mm thick.

They were lovely and ten times better than the shop bought ones! We made little star shapes for the top, and they made the house smell lovely.

yes I've made it before with no problems - its more a question of time and convenience!! (with 2 kids in the kitchen who will want to "help!!!") was more wondering if the syn value would change??

thanks for your reply....

I made little ones with thin pastry and reckon they are about 5 syns. I had one warm from the oven!

The ready made stuff is just as good as homemade so I woud go for that option everytime.

thanks guys.....am going to make them...and have a go at the apple and cinnamon strudel and also xmas pudding ice cream for xmas day dessert!!!! (from sw xmas recipe book....)....think I've got a cooking day ahead of me tmw!

Yum. We have taster evening on Monday so I am making Mincemeat Meringue tarts and baileys syllabub. All SW friendly! The tarts are 3.5 syns each and the syllabub is 4 syns each. They look lovely.

Mmm not sure it would survive Mr postie, but the recipe is in the little booklet that came with this months magazine. If you havn't got it, I can pop the recipe online tomorrow for you.

The recipe booklet is really good. I reckon I should get commission from this thread! I think everyone has bought the magazine now!

I'm not getting the mag till monday at group (which is also our tasting session) can you post the recipe for me tomorrow pretty please!!! With a strawberry on top!

Boo hiss shush about the mag lol our consultant wont let us buy it till Jan so I am off to look for it tomorrow in shops lol.

Have you tried the stuffed baked apples? Its apples mincemeat and sweetened yoghurt I think. Its meant to be delish!

Yes, will do.

The baked apples sound nice too and I think filo is the lowest in syns you can have on SW.

I made the baked apples and brought them to our taster session. I used a bag of "fun size" apples and only used a teaspoon of mincemeat in each one. The class went mad for them.
