I just can't seem to diet!

I've been trying since Sunday to lose a bit of weight. I always wake up feeling motivated, eat what I think is an 'ok' breakfast (one slice of wholemeal peanut butter toast with a scraping of butter), have a reasonable lunch, but then it all goes downhill.. first two days I made the mistake of eating too little at lunch so by 4pm I was crawling up (and eating) the walls. So today I thought I was doing quite well, snacking on a few nuts whenever I felt hungry, and yet I still managed to give in. It's really upsetting as I know as I'm eating that I'm going to be disappointed and feel terrible after, it's just like I can't stop myself..

I'm not overweight, my BMI is 23.6, but since starting university I've put on about a stone and I feel uncomfortable in my body now. I come from a family of big women, and it's like, if I can't control my weight now, when I'm young, what's it going to be like when I get older and my metabolism slows down? I really really just want to make it through one week.

hi Charll, sorry to hear your feeling low about your diet hun. From what you say though "one slice of wholemeal peanut butter toast with a scraping of butter" is very very little food to begin a busy day. I don't know if you ever heard of the phrase:

"Breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dine like a pauper"

Basically your body needs a good bit of energy to kick start the day and if you are only providing it with a meagre titbit it is going to demand more food as the day goes on. Many people find that they actually lose more weight and much quicker when they eat a large breakfast and smaller meals later on, because your body has more 'time' throughout the day to burn off the bulk of the calories that you eat instead of eating alot at night and then sleeping with those extra calories.

In my slimming classes I used to attend we were all told a cooked english breakfast was a great start to the day (of course we would grill the meat and poach or have scrambled egg), but nevertheless it was a hearty meal and then we would have a moderate lunch and a smaller evening meal (with lots of extra veg if you still feel you need it.) It is only a suggestion, but I think it may stop you getting hungry half way through the day and then wanting to give up totally.

By the way I lost five stone in 6 months following that rule and I hardly, if ever, went hungry.

Thanks for the advice, today I did alright.. so far. I bought a blender and made a lovely smoothie for my lunch which really filled me up. I think I might do kind of like slim fast only I make my own shakes from fruit, soya milk, low fat yoghurt and protein power (it's not meant to make you gain, it's like for vegans who don't get enough protein)?

I take your point about breakfast, but all the foods I love are dinner foods, and it helps me to think I'll have a satisfying tea when I'm not eating what I want for breakfast and lunch. Plus as I don't eat meat, I can't have a full-english, as much as I'd love to..

you will get your head round it hun :D

keep trying ;)
