Having lost 4 stones on CD, I still have 2 stones to go but have taken the plunge and joined a gym. I don't want any kind of mega muscle(!) but wnat to be toned, especially the old tummy and bingo wings! Any advice with what machines and for how long will be great. I am starting small with 2 visits per week at 45 ish mins per session. Also, will this be enough to make a difference?!

thanks

Why are women afraid of muscle? We cannot build huge bulk ladies unless we lift heavy, take protein supplements and other hormones and lift consistently (5 out of 7 days)...so toning is all you do if you weight train...ask my personal trainer...I'm lean, not muscley, heh! But I admit I do want to have my abs showing by next April...

So advice...arms (biceps and triceps) tricep dips, tricep extensions, pulldowns, kneeling assisted dips, tricep kick backs, the arm pull rope machine and the other one where it looks like you are pedalling but with your arms....I could go on...bicep curls, press ups, pull ups...tummy is sit-ups, weighted crunches, torso twists, core stability exercises...

Best way to look for specific programmes for these is on the net or specifically bodybuilding.com (no, no, really it is for toning, weight loss and diet/fat loss programmes as well as bodybuilding)

Or give me some more time and I can detail you a few circuits/cardio regimes and light weight regimes to help tone and burn fat. You cannot spot reduce remember so all over body work is best really...my weak areas are my tummy and my bummy...so I do extra work on these and it is helping...

I can also recommend the Callanetics DVD for toning...

Okay starting off slowly, I am sure 90 minutes a week will be fine...so let's assume you want to blast fat? Best machines are all the cardio based ones...cross-trainer, treadmill, rower, arm peddle thing (have no idea what it is called), step machine, side to side leg/hip machine, stationary bikes or spin class (these are usually 45 minutes in length)...start off slowly if your fitness level is low and build up speed and time. Or maybe look for circuit classes or the tum and bum ones which are also toning ones. Maybe do one cardio session and one weighted class per week? Depends on what you like and what machines you prefer, etc...
