Does CD mess up your metabolism??

On another forum I go on people are saying CD/LL/VLCD's cause's your metabolism to be messed up

Does anyone know if this is true?

I doubt it, I remember seeing a science show on tv ages ago where a woman who claimed to have a slow metabolism was tested extensively and it turned out she didn't and there were other conclusions drawn about how it's almost impossible to change your base metabolism.

I remember that - she'd convinced herself her weight was due to a slow metabolism, and it was obviously a shock for her to realise she just ate too much.

I do think people think of metabolism as some sort of clock inside them that ticks and people think that VLCD's slow it down.

Ultimately it is how many calories your body needs to function! So therefore the more muscle you have the higher etc etc.

I used to say I had a slow metabolism as one of the excuses for why I got big but the reality was that I just ate too many calories for my what I needed and hence stored it as fat.

people keep telling me that, most whove no idea what there talking about. i just take it all with a pinch of salt

It won't mess up your metabolism, people say that because when you weigh less you need to eat less, to maintain a massive weight you need to eat loads etc.
People always put these vlcdiets down, but for those of us who do or did have loads to lose they're life savers xx keep up the cd xx

i found that. the OH came home last night and said a woman at work said that i would put all the weight on again after CD as my metabolism will be so slow...

i have one thing to say to that:
:massmoon:

Dutch-you look amazing in your pic!!! 9.5st in 26 weeks? how did you do it? so far i am on week 8 of SS, no cheating and have lost 2st 8lbs and i have another 7st 10lbs to lose. did you do aamw/810 for a week every 13th week? x

Everyone I speak to about me doing cd, always has some story or another to tell me, always bad, their hair fell out, they put on 10st+, they ended up in hospital etc, etc Well I'm down over 2st so far, still got all my hair, not been in hospital so I just think they all say it just because they havent got the balls to change their lives the way we are and I will do my best to maintain properly, the cd way, not just come off of ss and straight back in to my old bad ways.

No, it definitely doesn't mess up the metabolism.

Having said that, your metabolism will lower whatever weight reducing diet you do.

As you get slimmer, you don't need the energy you once did, so your metabolism will reduce.

Your body wont say "aha....she did Cambridge, so we will reduce it even further", it'll just say "aha...skinny bod isn't carrying what it was...don't need to fire it up for so long" :D

However, the metabolism will also drop (again, whatever diet you are doing), as you reduce calories and go into dieting mode. But, it only drops so far, then it will level off.

One great thing about being in a mild state of ketosis with Cambridge, is that many people experience more energy, thus helping to keep the metabolism fired up:clap: cool eh.

When you start eating again (particularly as you move up the plans), it will restore back to normal again....just like with other diets:cool:

BTW, not info plucked out of the air, but results of research at the Swansea Trial in 1990 and also 2 trials done at the Cambridge Research Park :)

KD _ I just love your posts as you are so wise!
Thank you so much for your input - I appreciate your comments xx

Oooh, thankyou, thankyou. Mind you...did get the info from the Cambridge booklets :D

What about exercise? What impact does that have I wonder. I know muscle weighs more than fat but I reckon it earns its keep because it burns more fat at rest, surely by speeding up your metabolism?

I did an 8 mile hike on the South Downs yesterday. It will be interesting to see if it has an impact on my WI, as I always seem to lose 3lbs.

Yes. Certain exercises will increase your metabolism. Not just for the duration of the exercise, but for a while after. Depends what the exercise is though.

I know muscle weighs more than fat

Well, not exactly. A pound of muscle weighs the same as a pound of fat;), but muscle is denser and takes up less room:cool:

Yep. Muscle burns more calories per hour than fat  I think it works out about 50-60 calories more per day for every extra pound, though I've read anything from 5 cals a day - 80 cals a day...so who knows.

Best of luck with the wi Frances :)

Hi,

A little off topic but sort of related to some of the replies above....

An unpleasant (jealous?) colleague at work asked me why I'd moved my wedding ring to my middle finger. I told her it was because it kept falling off my ring finger due to weight loss. I added i will get it adjusted in future when I'm at my goal.

Her reply was: "Oh no, don't! I really wouldn't do that, when you put all the weight back on, your wedding ring won't fit you any more".

Nice.

I laughed and told her I wasn't planning to put any of it back on. "Oh you will, trust me. I know ALL ABOUT very low calorie diets", she said.

This from someone who is more overweight than me and has never done a VLCD! ;)

ah thats not nice at all - i would imagine they are envious of your ability to do cd - dont let the b*ggers grind you down lol

My very slim brother was always underweight, rather whippet-like....
After gaining 2st working out at the gym and eating healthily he was told by a (rather overweight) nurse during his work medical that he was "really rather overweight" according to their charts.
It doesn't take much more than common sense to look at him and see he has virtually no body fat!!
He has a very healthy self perception and just thought her comment was funny. :)

I've heard of this happening a lot -- very muscular people coming out as obese on the BMI chart. Can't believe there is not a way of taking this into account.

Unbelievable! What a thing to say. She really does seem to have a big problem with your weight loss. Take it as a compliment that she is noticing big time how dramatic your transformation is.

Do you have much more to lose? Maybe either get your ring adjusted soon or take it off until you get to goal as you it would be dreadful if it came off and you lost it. I mean we want to lose, but not that.

I agree, it's pure jealousy Judders. Now you're doing so well it draws unfavourable comparisons to her size :)

Also a little OT, but I've had a similar experience today. For birthdays at work it's usual for the person celebrating to bring in cakes for the office. One of my rather large colleagues came in today with bags full and proceeded to bring a HUGE  piece of my favourite into my office for me.

All my colleagues have been primed to take the food out of my hands if they see me with anything other than CD, so I thought she'd understand when I wished her a happy birthday and politely declined her offer. Her baffling reply was "I don't know why you're bothering to diet because you've got such a pretty face"

I thanked her for the compliment and jokingly replied that it was just a shame that somewhere south of my face is an ar*e the size of a country :D Then came the classic line "Well I still don't know why you're bothering because you're never going to be Kate Moss are you??"

Luckily it's the sort of comment she's known for, so I just smiled..... and no, I didn't take the cake :D
