I'm thinkin old school here.. what's everyone's fave...Shakespeare? Wilde? Austen? Bronte? Hardy? Lawrence? ya get where I'm going lol


Shakespeare -Titus Andronicus
Wilde -Dorian Gray
Austen - Pride and Prejudice
Bronte - Wuthering Heights
Hardy -Tess

So Ive listed a few of mine -come on ppl! Let me know -recommendations very much needed and appreciated!:D

Austen - Pride and Prejudice (I'm reading this again at the moment, wonderful!)

Hardy -The Mayor of Casterbridge

Dickens - Great Expectations

Eliot - The Mill on the Floss

I decided last week to go back & read some of the classics again & old favourites like Jamaica Inn :)
 
Nice!! 'The Mayor of Casterbridge' -do I sniff an A level student? ;) ;)...I love Hardy he's brilliant isn't he?
Never read 'Jamaica Inn' must get around to it..have so much still to wade through -there isn't enough time in the world..I wish I could read more quickly -and I get through books in a day a lot of the time..though I really should get out more lol
 
has anyone ever read the moonstone by wilkie collins? supposedly the first english language detective novel. it's fantastic. and i own a very very crumpled copy that i got for my 16th birthday :)

James Henry - Turn of the Screw
John Milton - Paradise Lost
Bram Stoker - Dracula

A few of mine...there's probably more but can't think right now. I love Keats poetry as well. :)
 
Dracula by Bram Stoker is amazing!
The Divine Comedy by Dante is very good

You can't beat those childhood classics... Jungle Book, Peter Pan, Water Babies, Black Beauty, Little Women, Alice in Wonderland, Robinson Crusoe, Treasure Island, Secret Garden, Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn When I was a kid I had a set of about 30 and I read them all.

oh i LOVED the waterbabies when i was little :D and tom sawyer. but then i also loved great expectations for some reason. i haven't read it as an adult...

I cannot list favourites as it would be too long (longer than this list?)...so these are some fave classic writers/playwrights/poets/philosophers, etc...I love Chekhov, Hesse, Kafka, Turgenev, Goethe, Dostoevsky, Joyce, Burroughs, Pirandello, Shakespeare, Euripides, Miller, Homer, Plato (most of the philosophers are great reads), Chaucer, Orwell, Coleridge...Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Jean Rhys, Percy Byshe Shelley's poetry...the classics are some of the best and worst reads...
 
I agree, reading works by philosophers can be very enlightening -and very often hilarious! I enjoy Pirandello's plays, I like Euripides though it depends on the translation doesn't it? I like Mary Shelley but not Percy and Chaucer is too tiresome for me lol

I liked reading Chekhov's short stories though..God, its been YEARS!!!

lol. I have a bad habit of looking for sexist/feminist readings in most of books that I read but sometimes it's nice to just enjoy the art of something ya know? That said, I'm not a huge Austen fan but I do LOVE 'Wuthering Heights'. I haven't read any other Bronte work, though I keep meaning to read Jane Eyre. And 'The Grapes of Wrath', I've wanted to read that one for a while. I have to really keep up on this sh!t. I keep gettin bogged down by silly books. I nod toward 'The 5 people you meet in Heaven.' Holy good God -no no no no no.

How do you know? Some of the books you've read just may not be labelled as a 'classic' yet! ;)

You're definitely into the gothic novels then. Have you read 'Catsle of Otranto' by Horace Walpole? It's mostly believed to be the first gothic novel. I haven't yet though so I can't review for ya. Sorry! LOL
