when your dog is attacked

What do you do when you're out walking your dog and it is attacked by other dogs?

I just realised when it happened today I wouldn't have a clue how to stop dogs fighting. All I did today was shout at them and pick him up to try and stop them getting to him, but I'm only 5'3 so any big dogs determined to attck him would still be able to get to him with me doing that.

Hi I advise people to carry a bottle full of stones with them and if they are approached by another dog who seems agressive in any way I tell them to shake it really hard!!! They are so shocked that an odd noise is coming from this human they nearly always forget about the dogs:), You can shout no really loudly and rattle this, Your size doesn't matter its your command over the other dog, if you are firm and don't show fear you will be able to deal with this, please don't let it spoil your walks with your dog, most responsible dog owners will not let your dog be aproached if its on the lead, and the un responsible ones need leads:).

thanks for that. I've been watching that dog borstal programme and they have geen getting people to use something like that to train the dogs so it must work. I'll try that.

The owners had let the dogs off their lead and I'm sure they were just over excited and wanted to play as they were running round and barking like mad. the owners had no idea where they were and were stuggling to catch them when I caught up wth them. My poor dog was terrified and wouldn't move when he saw them again so I told the owners that he was scared because they'd just bit him. They looked at me as if I was mad (I was pretty annoyed) so I didn't bother saying anything about thinking they were most likely just playing rough with him but they should take more responsibility over their pets. My cat is bigger than my dog and he's not one for playing rough at all so the last thing he wants is huge dogs coming up and biting him.

I thought they needed to know what their dogs are capable of when they're not lookin but I think I could have been nicer about it. I was just annoyed at the time, if they can't control their dogs then they shouldnt let them run loose, specially not 2 together. I know I can't control mine that well when he decides hewants to be somewhere to where I want him to be so I don't let him off the lead.

If your dog is on a lead and theirs are off they are treading a very thin line. The dangerous dogs act says basically that dogs must be under control at all times!!
My little yorkie got attacked by two staffies. They grabbed my dog and took off with her. The owner picked up the dog that had her and it still wouldn't release her. The owner was very abusive towards me told me I shouldn't let a little thing like that off the lead!! Both his were off the lead and apparantly had been chasing foxes...great so it's my fault he had dogs he couldn't control.
The police told me as my dog was off the lead there was little they could do... but advised carrying an umbrella one of those automatic press the button and it opens one.

Oh no I hope your little dog was ok after that! it's terrifying to see as the owner it must be so much worse for the little dog it's happening to.

I must admit I'm not a lover of all dogs. I love my dog of course but I really hate when people let their dogs wander off on their own. I used to go mad at my mother in law and I knew their dog was really soft, but you can never really predict how they will behave can you.

It's ridiculous that those dogs owner was abusive towards you and that it should be your dog that was on the lead. What about those poor foxes! (not a fox hunting fan can you tell?) He was encouraging his dogs to be viscious towards other animals, there should have been something done about that if nothing else.

Kati, glad I can help, I have 2 very large dogs and I would never let them off together its not safe, not for my dogs but if they aproached a smaller dog to play it might get trampled, I would never do that!!! but I must say my 11 stone dog has a best friend who is a jack russel and you should see them play, my heart is always in my mouth thinking my dog will stand on him but to date 8 years on thankfully they are both still in one piece:), 2 dogs owened together are a pack and they will approach another dog in an agressive way so you did right to give that owner a mouthful I just wish I was there!!!Don't let it upset you my pup was savaged by a huge dog and he had his teeth torn out and loads of stiches and I was worried it could happen again but I just came to the conclusion life is too short to spoil the great time we have out and about. Hopefully you and your little one will soon get over the horrible experience you had today and just take the bottle just in case- leave it in your walking coat:)

About 6 years ago our Harrier (a bit like an oversized Beagle) was attacked by a Dalmation. Our dog was on his lead but the other dog was loose - its owner just stood there, OH tried to prize its jaws off our dogs head & I gave it a kick in the stomach - none of it was planned it was just instinct & looking back the dog could have turned on either of us.

Our dog used to love other dogs but since then he is always on the defencive when another dog comes up to him. I worry as so many owners have their dogs off the lead & shout over "don't worry he's friendly"...yeah but mine is not (any more!)

We have friends with a dog who does not like other dogs - but they both get on fantastically...

Just curious, what sort of dogs do you have? I have two newfies, wondered if you were also owned by bears:D There's not many breeds that weigh 11st+.

Oh and I don't let mine off together either and only let them them off individually if we're out early and the park/wood is deserted. Not that they are viscious at all but do get over excited and could easily step on a little dog plus other dogs are often scared of them and tend to panic and snap at them.
My youngest is great pals with a miniture schnauzer, mind little Boris thinks he's an Irish wolfhound!!!!

Hi cheb have tried this a few times and each time my little monster wants attention and pulls my cable out:D . I have believe it or not and most days not, 2 gsd's Max is the biggest topping the scales and the vet and Everyone who meets him say they have never seen such a big one... He has even been measured by the vets husband who breeds gsd's and wanted to breed from him but he is too big and I would break my heart if the ***** died carrying his pups so I said no..... And my little one is a rescue ***** who is bigger than most male gsd's.... They don't have an ounce of fat on them I take better care of them than me:), they have fresh meat everyday and max eats sooo much 2lbs of tripe and 3/4 lb of meal..... They are huge and max was the runt of the litter because I didn't want a big dog!!!!!! When we were looking I wanted a pup to bring up with my daughter as she was small but 6 years later we had the ***** who is rescue and hard work but rewarding... I totally agree with you about letting them off- one night I was playing with max and he hid from me and jumped out of the bushes and scared the living daylights out of me!!!!! I screamed he barked and we both fell to the floor:D , I never understood what people said about him being so big before but now I totally understand... Your dogs I have to say are the gentle giants of the dog world they are so gentle and i've never met a nasty one thankfully:D. I dont think I could ever own a little dog again but the most frighteneing dog I have ever met was a jack russel- was I scared:D

Hi laura,

I have a little Yorkie and she has been attacked my a neighbours dog a few years ago, she was lucky, her pride was hurt and she got a couple of stitches!

I pick my dog up if I think trouble is going to start and I have had dogs try to snatch her from me. umbrella or a walking stick comes in handy.

I think dogs are a bit like children that they need to be socialized early in life to know how to get on with others when they are out and about.

I know just how you feel, when your dog is attacked it starts to change their nature, its really horrible.
With my previous dog, a lab cross, I had to drag a rottweiller off him. I grabbed its collar and twisted it round to choke the animal off, not a brave act but an instinctive one. I called to the owner to come and take her dog, and she said "I don't want to get bitten". I was gobsmacked, and replied "**!!**!!!!**!!**!", or words to that effect.
I have read advice that suggested pushing a stick up the rectum of the attacking dog to make it stop, not sure I'd want to try it! Now the owner, well that's a different matter!

Not sure how you would go about sticking a stick up the rectum of an angry dog:rolleyes:

I will never be able to look a cross dog in the face again without thinking about this:D LOL
