But it's all so unappetising :(

Okay so this may be just me, but it may not.

I was looking through the favourites thread on here to get ideas for snacking and general low point food. Now I did like the sound of home made spring rolls, so will try them, but everything else was SO not want I wanted to eat.

I'm sorry, but I can't get excited about some of the low point things (especially 0 point soup). No matter how you dress these things up they aren't the same as crisps and chocolate.

I stood in the cafe at lunchtime and looked at the fruit. I contemplated picking a piece up. But I just couldn't do it. There is no way that a piece of fruit would do when I had a craving for a Crunchie bar.

So, am I doomed to be fat? Can I change this mindset?

Just feeling so down right now

I can be like you at times where I just dont want to eat the healthy stuff. I think we just have to change out taste buds and get used to the food again. Its not that we dont like it, its just that we have probably eaten all the fat/sugar laden foods for so long we have fogotten what good food tastes like.

One of the things I've learnt since being on the plan is to break the habit of snacking on things like chocolate and crisps.

Previously I wouldn't have thought twice about shovelling chocolate down my gullet or pouring whole massive bags of crisps down my throat whilst watching tv, but it was essentially these habits that made me fat. After having a complete break from junk food for a couple of weeks when I first started, I now find that when I have it I find I need much less and savour it a lot more than I did before. I think the core plan helped break the habit for me as it focuses of filling you up during your meal times and then you listen to your body to establish how hungry/full you are. Oddly enough I have discovered that when i'm starving on the train home, whereas before I used to have a chocolate bar and/or some crisps, now an apple is enough to stop me from feeling too hungry until i get home.

For me it was a complete break from junk food that broke my mindset, and during that time I kept my mind occupied by scoffing vast quantities of healthy foods so I was never hungry. it wasn't easy at first, but it's not impossible either!

Which I guess takes us onto question what we mean by 'good' food.

Surely 'good' is a subjective term? Getting away from 'good' meaning 'food that is good for you', what does 'good food' mean?

Jamie Oliver may talk about the fact that in this country we have lost all sense of what good food is, but surely what is good to him (tends to be Italian, pasta, olive oil, fresh, cheese, salads, etc) is not good to someone else (my other half for example who can't stand pasta and will only eat mild cheddar cheese).

Who determined what 'good' food is?

In the Tudor period royalty ate a diet of venison, and other meats. No potatoes, hardly any sugar (honey used to sweeten food) but if it was available then it was put on everything including meat. For the period this was 'good food'. Doubt we would consider it to be so today.

Is it down to taste buds? Have they been so dampened by the rubbish that we can't taste 'good food' anymore? Personally I won't touch anything with coriander or cinnamon in as I can't abide the taste. A lot of top chefs put coriander in a LOT of recipes. But to me nothing with coriander in will ever be 'good food'.

Congratulations if you have made it to the end of my waffle!

Hi Willow, you are really struggling aren't you! It's a mind set thing, I'm sure we would all prefer chocolate and crisps sometimes but we know that they aren't doing us any favours. Maybe you need to think about the possibilty of doing a diet that explores your issues with food , than just doing a diet where you feel you are denying yourself. Also, and this is just my opinion, you have to be in the 'right place' in your life to succeed at any diet. I was a very heavy smoker, I knew all the risks etc but it wasn't until I was READY to give up and was doing it for me, that I managed and it's been exactly the same with dieting. Ok, you might look at my ticker and think what does she know!! I did LL and lost 4.5 stone in 3 months because I wanted it! Ok, I lost the plot a bit and became complacent which is why I'm back on a diet that will take me to where I want to be, I'm READY again! The point is, you have to reach the stage where you love yourself enough to let go of the hold food has over you and start living. Remember, this is just what I think, I'm not trying to dictate what is right for anyone else, it's just how I see it.:eek:. Best of luck.

Unfortunately that hasn't worked for me :( I had a complete break from junk food for 5 months when I was pregnant as I had gestational diabetes.

It is things like this that just make me wonder if it is just me and what is wrong with me.

'Good food' shouldn't be confused with 'Healthy Food'.

What was considered as being good food throughout history was not a reflection on what is considered actually healthy. What royalty ate in the tudor period wasn't chosen because people thought it was healthy, but because they though it reflected their wealth and the best of what was available.

These days most dieticians would agree that foods that are healthy and good for you would consist of foods that are low in calories and fat. The idea being that low calorie foods fill you up and give your body the nutrients that it needs.

Celebrity chefs generally declare foods good because they taste good, not necessarily because they are healthy.

Someone once told me that in order to get a change then you have to make a change otherwise it's not going to happen - They were right too (which i discovered after too much faffing on different diets and trying to find an easy answer!).

I agree. Hence my rant on who is to say what 'good food' is.

which is what led me to question what good food is. Who says that fat/sugar laden foods aren't good foods?

I'm probably just playing devil's advocate here, or just trying to sort out how I feel in my own mind.

Yes I am struggling. I have considered other diets - mainly food replacement ones in the hope that removing food from the equation would solve the problem, but I worry about coming off something like that. I can see how WW works for life which is what is appealing. Plus I'm about to start my teacher training year and I don't know if I could survive it on just 500 cals a day!

its up to you what you determine good food your heart and your head are not working together if you want to loose weight you have to sacrafice something but eat what you want as long as you point it

Hey there... Glad you are getting this all off ur chest... hopefully something you say while you are wading through ur thoughts will make sense to you and maybe change the way you see food in your life.

On your thoughts about the crunchie... well I have just had a compromise... I wanted two biscuits but I needed a banana for energy for the gym... soooooooo I had half a banana and 1 biscuit... and I don't feel hard done by at all!!!

Its defo all about the mindset gal

Interesting debate! I would agree that 'good food' is not synonymous with 'healthy food' but I think it's fair to say that good food is a matter of personal choice and there might be a wide range of difference as to what consitutes that, whereas we'd be in a similar ball-park if we were asked what we thought constitues healthy food.

The principle of WW is very much the 80/20 principle - if you eat healthy food 80% of the time, you can have less healthy (and possibly more yummy, depending on your worldview) food 20% of the time.

Nobody's saying you need to think "wow, broccoli soup, hold me back" but actually, 0 point veg soup (which is very nice by the way) frees up some points so you can have some chocolate.

Quid pro quo :D

Rosemary Conley choc mousse by the way. Only 2 points. I have one every day ;)
