Walking

MadamDotty

Back again!
Hi - does anyone else out there walk for exercise?

I wear a pedometer called a Fitbug, which you plug into your computer to upload your steps each day & you're given targets to aim for each week.

I really enjoy walking and I've found that as I'm now on maintenance, if I walk around 10,000 steps per day I can maintain my weight with my current healthy eating plan, this week I've been doing 11,600 steps per day and my weight has come down slightly, which I've no complaints about:D

I don't do an awful lot more and quite like this for weight maintenance, although I would like to do some resistance training, which is so beneficial I know.

Just wondered if there's any more walkers out there?

Hi Ann, that's a good improvement - well done. If I walk for 25 mins at a fairly good pace, possibly 4-5mph, I'll clock up around 3000 steps. Obviously this is different for everyone, but it gives you an indication.

I too have a treadmill, got it to jog, but the jogging seems to have gone by the wayside at the moment:eek: but I still use it to top up my steps when I haven't reached my target or the weather is too awful to go outside.

Keep up the good work.

Yes walking is the only exercise I do. I am on LL and am a bit worried about doing anything any more strenuous. I get a bit floaty headed and my GP said its just my body adjusting to lower blood pressure and lower blood glucose. So I am not supposed to go too mad yet !

I was given a pedometer by LL on week 2 I think and its good but doesn't link up to the PC or anything fancy. I was quite shocked that most days I only did about 4000 steps when I should be doing nearer to 10000 so I am making an effort to increase it.

I don't manage a long walk every day but say three days a week. I do feel tired at the end but also feel good as well if that doesn't sound too crazy !

I wish it wasn't too dark in the evenings now or maybe I would do more !

OH & I love walking & try to go for a long walk at least once a week. We get the dog in the pram & DD on her lead (or is that the other way round?!) & go for a couple of hours, usually stopping to play in the park or feed the duck's at some stage. OH used to be in the services so we walk VERY quickly.

We used to live near Plymouth & love walking on the moors or along the coast path. Now we are still lucky as we can go on some nice walks directly from the house or a few miles away we have a nature reserve with lots of lakes etc.

Yes mine too Nicky, I know exactly what you mean:)

My target for this week is 12800, which is quite a tall order, don't think I'm going to manage it today, I'm up to 12006, another 794 before bed - hmmmm not sure about that:rolleyes:

I walk lots,do not know how many steps but walk my dog Belle for aprox 30mins each morning, walk to work and home and walk around most of the day in work.
When I am not working I am sure Belle hids when I put my trainers on and says no not another walk.Sure it has helped with the weightloss.

I walk most weekends with my Rambler's Association group (www.fenlandramblers.org.uk). Usually 6-8 miles or about 15,000 - 20,000 steps. In between, I go to the gym most mornings and jog about 2-3 miles on the treadmill as well as other forms of exercise. I find I need to combine exercise with dietary control in order to keep my weight in check. CD has been a great success and have lost 35lbs in 6 weeks. Would like to lose another 30lbs before the end of the year.

ooooough...I was looking at them fitbug thingies...expensive though eh? worth the money you think?

Definately, worth every penny for me. I wore a pedometer before, which helped as it made me aware of how many steps I was taking, but I think having the targets set for you & knowing somebody's "keeping an eye" on you so to speak really does help me. I'm not an exercise person at all, I have so many bits of equipment dotted around the house that were all two minute wonders, even my treadmill was bought because I was definately, absolutely going to be jogging seriously and now I only use it for walking (but at least I'm still using it).

I'm 10 times more active than I was, through walking, I couldn't have contemplated 12000 steps even a few months ago and I know it's helping me maintain my loss without feeling like I'm dieting.

Wow! No wonder you're called benwickrambler, sounds like you're doing a great job there. Good losses too, you'll surely lose that 30lbs by the end of the year:)

I've been looking at the Ramblers Association and other local groups as it would be nice to go for different walks and have company, although I love walking my little dog, and plug myself into my iPod. Might give one a try this week, see how I'm fixed.

Keep up those mighty steps :)

Dotty - Got first pink face yesterday !!!! - I feel great - Got low targets though 3500 + 1000 aerobic steps - but i manged 3100 normal +1900 aerobic.

Approximately took 16 mins to walk a mile so am looking to improve on that each day.

Someone was saying it is expensive - I surfed the internet for a promotion code and got 25% off (pm me if you are interested) - plus I opted for the pay monthly - but it works out great cause it does really push you to make those steps and improve each week - Highly recommended if you just need that extra push.

I forgot to say that for the benefit of anyone else reading this thread that a very cheap and effective pedometer can be bought at Tesco for just £5.97. I have one and once it is set up correctly not only does it count steps but also calculates distance walked etc. The RA national web site has a walks finder into which you enter your post code to find walks near you. The RA will give you a warm welcome and let you try a few walks before becoming a member.

Yay!!! Well done, it's great to get a pink face smiling back at you. (For anyone not familiar with Fitbug this isn't the state of your own face at the end of a long walk!!! You get a little face on the calender each day and a pink one means you've reached both targets - aerobic & non-aerobic steps)

Keep stepping Shazza :D

Just for you Shazza :D
