Cat - is he chancing his paw?

OK I have 2 cats and they are mainly house but will wander out for an hour during the day.

Recently a third one is permanently either on my front or back step. He seems to be trying to make friends with my two. Definitely trying to constantly get into my house. I petted him the other day to see if he was thin and while he wasn't thin, his coat was rock hard and like wire. My twos are silky and soft.

So I am trying to work out if he is a stray or not or just chancing his paw trying to get an extra meal.

He sits and miaows at the top of his lungs on my doorstep and it can be 3am, 5am, 7am it doesn't matter to him. He has even slept in my dog kennel (I don't have a dog anymore). But he does disappear for several hours each day. This has all been going on for about 3 weeks. What do I do? I don't know if I should feed him or not? Any ideas?

well I know 2 of my cats spend half their time in the flat at the other end of my block, and they're definitely not strays/underfed!! they're just lazy, and the guy who lives there says it's like having pets without the hassle and commitment!! he leaves the door open for them all day when he's there, they wander in, have a drink and sit in the window till I get home from work! at least I know they have some shelter!
the other cat doesn't seem to go in there though, she must go elsewhere...
they won't let other cats come in my flat though, there's no compromise there!!

i wonder if it is a stray.. it's not got a collar or anything I assume? funny how it's only recently started turning up, maybe it's new to the area.. keep an eye on it, if it starts to look ill/thin maybe put a note around it's neck with your number on it saying "am worried for your cat, please call" and then either someone will call you, or at least remove the note... or the cat will come back with the note still there which would suggest it has nowhere to go..

if you are really worried try getting hold of it and take it to the nearest vets to have it scanned, it may be chipped.

it might just be wanting a new place to visit though :)

Thanks girls

Lizs81 I may try that yet. Had another pet of him this morning and he is definitely not hugely underweight. Maybe you are right - maybe he just fancies a holiday home!

I remember hearing about someone's cat once, they wondered why he was getting so fat, so they figured he must be scrounging off people. They put a note on his collar saying "If you feed me, please ring..." and they got 9 phone calls one day :D heheh. greedy cat.

and there was another on the bbc website a couple of months back, went missing, so it's owners put posters up and a lady called them saying she'd found him about a mile and a half away from home... next day he goes again, and again the lady finds him..
now he has a routine where he wanders off, visits this lady, and then on the way back from the school run the owner has to go pick him up, she just opens the car door and he jumps in!

cats are just bizarre creatures, who knows what they're thinking?!
