Would it be cheating

Hello all you lovely peeps

I don't knoe really how to start this question, but I guess the beginning it the best place.......

Ermmm well...........................................

I am having a Gastric Band fitted on the 21st of April (not long now:eek:), I was meant to be having a Gastric Bypass but my medical condition (BrittleAsthmaType2:sigh:) is so bad my surgeon said I would have a less than 25% chance of getting through the surgery as it is so invasive, hence we have opted for a 2 stage procedure combining of a Band and then turning it into a Bypass a year later on if my chest has improved, as a 36 year old with a lung age of 89 you can understand the reasoning behind the surgeons decision, but I was DEVASTATED when I was told the newz as I was looking forward to loosing the weight quickly.

Anyways this brings me to my QUESTION.........

Would it be classed as :eek:CHEATING:eek: if I went to SLIMMING WORLD classes after my band is fitted?

My mum has been with SW for 3 years and has lost 5 stones and kept about at goal for 2 years, I have indeed been succsessfull at SW but I have had a 9 stone influx of weight since a asthma attack nearly killed me in 2005 due to loosing my mobility, and my dietition said as I am unable to exersize it would take me about 7 years to get to a SAFE weight by diet alone, 7 years that I may not have as my attacks are so very frequent and I am wheezing all the time with trying carry my 21 stones around.

The Band is NOT a miracle cure it is ONLY a TOOL and indeed is less successful than a Bypass, as the Bypass works with a Malsorbative effect aswell as a Restrictive method....... I figured that If I went to the SW class with my mum and did the diet I could probably have the BEST result from both the Band and the diet and it may be so effective that I might NOT need the bypass afterall, but I don't want people in class thinking I was a cheat etc, as more than likely I would 'Slimmer of the Week' at some point.

I just want to rid myself of the burden of this weight and give me some quality of life, and I see SW with the Band to be the way forward.

Sorry to babble on and on........

Any comments Posative:) and Negative:( are welcomed.

Thanks for listening

Nessa :wavey:xxxxx

Hi Nessa,

Sorry to hear you're having a tough time, I can't really answer many of your questions, but I know (aslong as your doctor / dietican agrees) that you will be more than welcome at any Slimming World class. I wouldn't see it as cheating and would offer you as much support as I do with everyone else.
SW is great and classes will give you the boost you may need. Sorry I don't know much about gastric bands etc.

All the best of luck to you hun xxxx

Thanks for your reply hunny, Yeah I do know that the support that the SW group offers is invaluable, my mum still goes every week (other then when I was in Lifer Support:eek:) and she has never thought of stopping.

Maybe I should hava word with the SW counciler and see what she says, I think there would be a problem If I won Slimmer of the Week every week and I took the fruit home:eek::eek: lol..... But maybe I can do a kind of NON COMPETTITOR kinda arrangement... Mmmm I dunno... but ALL ideas welcome.

Thanks sweetie.... xxxxxxxxx

I dont think it would be cheating at all, in fact i think it's a very healthy eating plan and will help you. Good luck with the op and keep posting to let us know how you do! :)

I agree with lousie and bumpy0!

It wouldnt be cheating at all, firstly your dietician would advise you to eat a healthy diet and with SW you can do that!

I wish you all the luck in the world and i hope your operation goes really well.
Visit our forum and let us know how you are doing, then once you feel better start the diet....EVEN start the diet before your operation.......what a advantage! You will lose weight B4 the op and have better understanding of the diet when you rejoin us after the operation.

Sorry to hear you are having such a hard time fo it. You are in a catch 22 situation, your asthma will improve if you lose weight but losing it may make it worse. you poor thing.

Can't really answer your questions I'm afraid but I wouldn't have thought it was cheating and I'm sure if you meet with resistance if you explain your situation I'm sure people would understand.

Have you thought of doing something like Cambridge or Lipotrim to give you a quick initial weight loss before op and then you can follow it up as you indicate?

Anyway whatever you decide, do it healthy and do it for yourself. Sending you hugs and thinking of you.:hug99::hug99:

Of course it's not cheating! Although would you really need to? Having the band will restrict the amount you can eat to just a fist size and the basis of SW is free food and eating as much as you want. You will lose loads after the band has been fitted (after it has been inflated 4 weeks later) and I'm not sure that combining it with any slimming club will alter the effects of it either way. I think it may be a waste of money for you and it might be better to just get some healthy cook books and eat a healthier, smaller, diet.

If you want to join a group you will always have a warm reception and get loads of support. Good luck with the op x

Hiya Ruthy
Thanks for your kind and appreciated words.
I am on a pre-op diet rite now, I have to do this LOW CARB diet as I am having the surgery done lapascopically and they have to shrink my liver, but I already have lost a little weight, I have adopted a kinda Red day diet that is restricted and to be honest I am looking forward to doing the slimming world diet.
Thanks again hunny.

Yeah it is a bit of a 'catch22' situation, but I have to keep focused on the outcome, I know that it will be worth the risks involved.
I dont realy know anything about Cambridge or Lipotrim, I would be greatfull for any help I will have to look into them.
Thanks for your kindness and support.

I can remember Anne Diamond getting labled a Cheat on the TV programme Celebrity Fat Club as she had got a lap band fitted, that why I thought that I might get labled too.
In think with seeing my mum do sooooo well with SW and realizing that theb diet is healthy I thought that it would help.
I think you have a valid point about the money side of things, it would be expensive, and if I got slimmer of the week I would feel bad.... all well.....
Thanks for your support hunny.

Hi Nessa,
Having done slimmingworld for a little while I can tell you that it really does teach you about healthy eating and learning how to cook the foods you love in a low fat way so you feel like you aren't missing out. Unlike some of the other diets it's not that restrictive on portion sizes, depending on which day plan you are following, and I know that when I did it I was loosing weight but I ate like a horse. With that in mind I think you should maybe go along to a meeting and speak to the councillor to see if they think it would be suitable for you. Also, have you spoken to your doctor about what sort of eating plan you should be following after your operation? You don't want to overdo anything and make yourself ill.
As for the slimmer of the week thing, I don't think you should stress yourself out worrying about it. Yes a certain amount of your weight loss will be due to the band, but that doesn't mean the people in your group will be any less supportive. Every person who joins a group or plan is doing so because they want help to change their habits and their lives - why would you be any different? Don't forget that the likes of Anne Diamond are unfortunately open to anything the press or jealous TV types want to say - you are a normal person who doesn't have to be in the spotlight and deserves all the support that is available to you. Groups like slimmingworld can really offer the support that it sounds like you want.
Best of luck with your op, and for the future. I'm sure we'd all love to hear how you get on whatever you decide.

She got labelled a cheat as she was in a competition situation and she hadn't told them at the start of the show so for the purpose of the show I guess it could be viewed as cheating. But you are doing it for you not for a competition therefore not cheating!

If you are worried about Slimmer Of the Week you can ask your consultant to discount you from that part. x

What ever you decided to do i wish you all the luck in the world sweety!

Having it done laparocopically is the best option for you hunny by far, I work in theatre as a ODP and i know that its less invassive, you have better and quicker recovery. To be opened for this op is a nightmare as your recovery and pain take it to another level.

ive done cambridge, you cant be on it before an op as it puts you into ketosis and it would be dangerous to be in ketosis during an op, think you need to be off its a few weeks before an op and for 3 months after so wouldnt be viable for you sorry.
i think sticking to healthy eating is a good way

Yes going into a operation in ketosis with be devastating, your body would already be comprimisd without haveing to deal with the trauma of a operation on top.

Im glad you know your stuff, you certainly seem very very focused. Im sure you will do just fine.
