IBS and slimming world?

Hi
Just wondering if anyone else experiences this or has any advice?
I've been doing Sw on / off for ages. I got to target easily , 10 yrs ago, put it all back on and more. Been at the 12-13st mark ever since, losing a few lbs, then putting back on. I didn't have ibs 10 yrs ago.
I started class in March this year and after about 4/5 weeks I got a really horrible episode of ibs, which for me, us more painful if I let myself get even slightly hungry. I get horrible back and stomach pain, bloating, wind etc. so, I gave up because I just couldn't do it whilst having the ibs.
So, I rejoined about 5 weeks ago, and 2 weeks ago the ibs started again. I'm on day 13 of constant pain :( I missed class last week because I'd just been eating anything and everything, got weighed in boots and I'd put 2lb back on of the 5 that I'd lost so far.
I have no idea what foods trigger it, or if it's just random. I know stress brings it on.
I'm wondering whether I should look into a different diet? I'm so annoyed though because I like all the pasta/ rice etc on green days.
Going to class tomorrow but I don't have time to stay and talk tho the consultant about it.
Thanks for any advice x

The best thing is to keep a diary and write down every day what you eat and at the end of the day write down how you are feeling and over time you should see what your triggers are. I know for me it is bread and pasta.

I found on SW I was fine on Red days

I have IBS & I'm following Slimming World :) It is a struggle, to say the least! It varies from person to person, but I've found myself having problems when I started - Too much fibre was making me unwell. Now I'm getting unwell randomly. I've been really constipated & in a lot of pain the last few days for no reason at all!

Have you been to your GP at all? Mine has just prescribed me some anti-spasmodics,which help a lot with the pain aspect - as does a microwavable teddy! And some Fybogel. Not sure how that will work, but I can only find out by trying, I guess!

I hope you're able to stick to plan & lose the weight that you want to. I keep finding that I have to have a week off here & there to adjust my IBS & meds, hopefully it'll settle down eventually xx

I have ibs and follow slimming world (EE/green) with little trouble. It flared at the beginning- probably all the fibre and unusual eating- but I've settled right down now.
My ibs is mostly triggered by stress and too much rich food! So if I have a cheat day I pay for it lol.
Agree with the heat pack/microwavable teddy and I also drink peppermint tea when I'm ill. I also take peppermint oil capsules (you can get them in holland and Barrett) with my meals when it gets bad! I'd recommend keeping a diary to try and identify your triggers, so you can avoid where possible.
Hope this helps x

Thanks for the replies :)
I've been prescribed buscopan and I'm having that daily, also digestive enzyme tablets. I've tried peppermint tea, it doesn't seem to do much with me.
The only thing that really helped me so far was juicing, it seemed to take the pain away immediately, so may try and incorporate that into Sw.
I really don't want to give up but not looking forward to going to class tmorw and prob put it all back on already :(

It's difficult to not get disheartened. I had a good first weigh in & then had to come off plan for 2 weeks to get my ibs sorted! Had a similar problem again just recently & I'm dreading WI later because I know I've gained! Once you get your IBS sorted, there'll be no stopping you! If it helps, my IBS did get used to it after a few weeks. While I was adjusting, I was having to take lactulose daily. But it did get better xx

Hi slimmergem

Thanks for the reply. I hope it does settle down like you said.
Good luck for weigh in :) I'm getting weighed tonight too, I'm guessing I've put on about 3lbs :(

Hi,
I only put 2lb on so not as bad as I thought, was quite happy with that because I've been mostly off plan for about 2 weeks.
Sorry to hear you're feeling rubbish today. Have you tried digestive enzyme tablets? you can get them from holland & barret or boots etc. I think they're starting to help with my ibs. I think my flare up is slowly fading now after 2 weeks, thank god lol.
Hope you're feeling better soon xx

How you don't mind me jumping on this thread but I suffer with Ibs too and I take the peppermint oil capsules from boots, peppermint tea, buscopan, docusate. I was wondering what the digestive enzyme tablets were and do?

Mine flares up with stress, too much bread product white or brown and too much rich foods x

Hi
I'm not exactly sure what they do apart from helping with digestion and heard they're good for ibs. I heard about them from the jon Gabriel method.
I've had them from holland & barret before which were good, the ones I have now are from boots and they stink of fish :( but they seem to be helping.
I'm feeling a lot better now, hoping to get back into Sw but getting sick of having the same things all the time. Might try some red days x

I was doing SW but due to IBS-C misery I took a month or so off to give my guts a break. Stress is the main trigger for me, and whilst off the wagon, I cut most fresh fruit and veg out of my diet. It didn't help, so I went back to the docs. Now I have Magrogel sachets and amitryptyline at night which apparently eases the spasmodic gut. I've rejoined SW and concentrated on eating plenty of fruit and veg, slight IBS but lots of long walks are helping (shame I spend my days sat behind a desk during the week!).

From my Android Tablet, with added typos.

Like some of the others have mentioned on here, SW tends to help me manage my IBS. Mine flares up when I eat to much rich or dairy based food (hence pizza making me v poorly!) and the structure of slimming world seems to help me restrict the bad stuff. I think the key is finding the balance between too much fibre (from all the fruit and veg) and too much rich stuff. I also find water helps digest the increased fibre!

I never get IBS until I am on SW, and I found that it was eggs which I love, so I try to avoid them now in a meal but don't cut them out of what they are in as an ingredient if that makes sense. Such pain though never experienced anything like that, first night I got it I nearly called an ambulance I was on the floor in agony couldn't get up, didn't know what had hit me. Hope you are finding ways of dealing with it, certainly have my sympathies x
