Excerise - Gain

Hey everyone,

Just a quick question.. How long do people normally STS or gain when they start exercise? I've got my weigh in tonight and I started exercising this week so I'm expecting a STS or a gain because of water retention... Does anyone have any experience of this? How long before the water retention goes?

Thank you ;D

I think this is a difficult question to answer, one of those how long is a piece of string questions. I'm sure I read someone's post who said it was perhaps 2 -3 weeks before they saw a shift in weight, but I think this could vary depending on the level of activity you are doing and the frequency. However, whatever you are doing I would say keep going as it can only be a good thing :D

(I hope that nobody replies to this thread using the phrase ' remember that muscle weighs more than fat'.... :D )

I think like JVB said it will depend on the intensity of the activity you are doing, and how much water you get down you during and after.
Also, it might depend on how active you were before starting exercise. I swim a couple of times a week (must drink half the pool while im at it- gross) and dont think I retain any water but I've generally always been reasonably active.
In short, I can't really answer your question lol
Good luck with your wi!

Thank you for all your replies!

I literally did no exercise before so my body is going to go into shock haha!

I have exercised since day one and it never really made a difference right up until xmas. I started doing more exercise than usual and in January I stayed the same for 3 weeks in a row. When I did start losing again it was only 1 lb at a time and even then a few weeks later i sts again for another 2 weeks but I lost way more in inches so over all it balances itself out in the end. Good luck :) x

Everyone is different with weight loss and exercise... it's kind of like food too, what works for some people doesn't always work for others!

Bottom line as JVB said is that exercise is amazing and does amazing things to your mentality and body confidence. Working it into a routine really makes you feel better about life in general and instinctively helps you make better lifestyle choices. I naturally eat better when I exercise and feel better as a result.

The numbers will go down accordingly if you keep it up. You rarely see a fat athlete ;)

BUT the same size piece of muscle weighs more than a piece of fat the same size :D

Completely see all of your points and they make sense! Nothing bad can come out of doing exercise.. You're right! It'll all fall into place sooner or later :)

Love that picture - thats exactly what is meant by the muscle/fat arguement that always rears its head!

prob come off on your second weigh in. I was a steady 2lb a week loser on sw before and i sts then lost 4lb the following week.

This happened to me and sadly I fooled myself into believing that fat weighs less than muscle....
I put on 3 weeks in a row and I had this week as holiday so let's see next week x

I was speaking to my gym instructor about this the other day and he was saying that the only reason I would gain any weight would be because I was retaining water- nothing to do with the fat/muscle argument. He was saying that as long as I up my water intake during and after my workout- which I do 3-4 times a week- that my body will not need to retain any water and therefore I will lose weight no problem. Fingers crossed its as easy as that!
Good luck with your WI x

Haven't seen an STS or gain as of yet.. Actually lost 5lb since I joined 2 weeks ago! Goingggg well it seems :)

I drink lots of water whilst I'm there so don't think I am retaining water! But I definitely have gained muscle as I can see it.. Happy all around!

I've been on the plan since the 18th feb and had never put on until 4 weeks ago... I can't actually wait for weigh in to see if I have lost anything this week

Hi

I started Slimming World 5 weeks ago and lost each week until last week where I significantly upped my exercise....put on 1lb. It will all be down to fluid retention which muscles need to repair the small tears that occur through exercise (or the burn!)

Good luck
