I have spent the past 2 days on the Cambridge Diet forums and was convinced that this was the one to try ( well it's the only one I haven't tried!!!!). Slightly worried about the lack of calories and the headaches but everyones weight loses seemed to be fantastic so why would I not want to do this but as I sat at the table with my 2 young daughters while they ate baked potato with tuna and salad and I remembered the days that I did food optimising and thought what on earth am I doing??? Do I really want to or need to put myself through the torture of going on a very low calorie diet just to have faster results. I am sure that for some people it may be the right decision but for me ? I'm not so sure. Admittedly I need to lose at least 5 stone but I also want to teach my daughters to eat healthily and having nothing other than shakes and 6 litres of water a day is that really the way?
I lost nearly 3 stone in the past with Slimming World then did what a lot of people do thought I could do it alone and guess what ? Correct it all went back on.
Has anyone tried CD then went back to SW ?

I did CD a couple of years ago and have maintained just fine since I finished.

At the end of the day you have said the diet is torture, if you believe that then you won't do it, I found the diet was the opposite, it gave me back my life and was nothing but a positive in my life.

In terms of the kids I cooked for my two every night when I was on sole source and I explained to my elder about why I was on a diet, why it was important to eat healthy and he has a nice trim body and isn't food obsessed in anyway.

Different diets for different people, for me Cambridge was a great way to get slim quick, it tasted pretty good, I wasn't hungry, I was getting compliments, I was buying smaller clothes, I liked the look in the mirror and generally I loved the diet and so I finished what I started.

Therefore my advice is to do what you think is best but make sure your mind and your body want to do the same thing.

You like the idea of a fast weight loss (don't we all!) but you use a word like 'torture' to describe CD ... so I think you've answered your own question there. You cannot go into a diet like a VLCD with the attitude that it's torture - it just wouldn't work. You'd feel like you were being punished instead of being 'released'.

SW worked for you once - so it can again. There's an old saying 'if it ain't broke - don't fix it'. Perhaps it's best to stick with what you know and are comfortable with. Just my opinion :)

I tried SW and ended up doing CD! I found there wasn't enough structure (for me personally) on SW plus the leader of the group was much bigger than me and didn't seem to be able to make SW work for her...
It's all down to what you personally find easier, and I can totally understand that you'd want to set a good example to your daughters.
If SW worked for you and you think it will again if you stick with it, that may be the best way for you :)

Sorry icemoose I didn't mean to offend anyone I'm just really low at the moment and looking for some direction. maybe CD is exactly what I need and I hadn't thought about explaining to the kids rather felt I should hide it from them. Suppose I'm just really embarrased that I can't stick to any diet and I'm so overweight. How do you maintain on CD once you are happy with your weight loss?

You didn't offend me at all hunca!! Truthfully!!

All diets that are safe work as long as you have your head on them.

If you see them as a negative (torture is such a strong thought!) then you just won't be able to do it.

If you can find a diet to embrace, be evangelical about, then you will love it, and when you enjoy something then you tend to succeed at it so much more.

Why not look at Cambridge 810? You could have a healthy chicken/fish meal with the kids and show them what low calorie healthy food can taste like and then have packs in the day when they are at school?

Whatever you do though please embrace it and smile about it as that way you will enjoy it.

Dieting 1% in your tummy! 99% in your head...

In terms of maintenance now I tend to have my own little ways of staying slim, as a general rule I am good in the week so I tend to not have cakes, buns and general high fat stuff and then at the weekends I relax a bit more.

Ultimately long term weight maintenance requires moderation and that takes practice using resources like WLR.co.uk etc.

Thanx icemoose for your very wise words. I am waiting for a form to have signed by my doctor then I've to phone back the CDC to arrange to meet with her. I think I will meet with her before writing the diet and myself off !!
Having spent all my adult life yo-yo dieting I think a large part of my problem is down to me fearful of being a failure again but as you say with thoughts like that what hope do I have.

Don't be scared of failing, the people who succeed the most in life are those that fail along the way and get up and keep going.

If you decide that this is your moment to show yourself you can be whatever and whoever you want to be then you'll blink and be slim.

You can do it! Just got to believe you can/will do it...

Quick question before I go to put kids to bed.
I am on Thyroxine and Atenolol for high blood pressure do you think my CDC will refuse to take me on or is it just a case of having the Doctor confirm that he/she is happy for me to do this diet?

I think you may need to get your doctor to tip you the nod but my daughter was on Thyroxine and did CD so I don't think it's prohibitive.

Atenelol is for high blood pressure and that will need GP signature if you wish to follow a programme under 1200 calories.

The thyroxine is for an underactive thyroad and again will need GP signature.

As a lot of people have high blood pressure due to weight (not everyone but a lot), and therefore you need to be GP monitored because as you lose weight you may find the medication levels need adjusting.
