Chow Mein Shock

Someone posted earlier on IG (insta-gram) that chow mein is now 16.5 syns

Their consultant had told them at class and posted on face-book that the syn values had changed on the SW website and in the syn calculator.

Apparently SW Head Office are investigating after the consultant flagged it to them. Just wanted to let you all know just in case!

I am gutted - this was my favourite chinese takeaway option! xx

Our consultant posted the following on our FB page:

Some takeaway values are being looked at by head office as it has come to the attention that oils and sauces are very hard to ascertain in fast food outlets per grammage. You will probably see lots of things on social media sites soon and the app is being updated as it is being checked. Some Syns are the daily amount but, as takeaways are normally only used once or twice a week (or maybe not at all), this can still fit in beautifully with food optimising. Don’t despair at the news, it’s only a minimal amount of your weekly food (if at all), if you have takeaways.

Once a week or after weigh in probably won't scupper your weight loss, don't panic! :)

I wouldn't be so sure! Did they used to be like 6 Syns? An extra 10 Syns a week can push you over the edge. It's just the same as "black holing". I don't see why people are so worried - if you want one so much then you can have one, just save your days Syns. We get 15, so it's only 1.5 Syns over. You could easily save that from another day. I just don't think we should be encouraging having it and counting it as the old Syn value lol, kind of defeats the object.

I understand what you're all saying but I don't like to take that approach personally.

I worry that if I start to do things like that then little tweaks will start to creep in generally. I am an incredibly slow loser and I really need to watch what I eat to shift the pounds especially as I'm beginning to get closer to my target.

News like this is devastating... not to be dramatic or anything ;) xx

So if you really want to have a chow mein at 16 syns just eat syn free rest of the day. Yes its a days syns but you don't have to have it on top of your normal daily syns!

so what is less syns at the chinese now?

To me, it really isn't worth 16.5 syns. Chicken/beef in black bean used to be fairly low too - not sure if that's changed too now given what Stevie posted... x

360g beef / chicken in black bean sauce from a chinese takeaway is still registering at 5 Syns on the app / website.

You just need to make sure you check the Syn values before you eat anything, as they are likely to be changing in the near future, as explained above x

It depends how often you are having them surely? Isn't this what flexible syns are for. Save them up if you want it that badly that's what I will do.

Do you mean weekly syns? Flexible syns are used on special occasions only. There's a really helpful thread about it here - http://www.minimins.com/slimming-world/186910-flexisynning.html

I try not to use weekly syns as you're not guaranteed a loss - I know it works for a lot of people but unfortunately not always for me :( xx

It was only ever a guess anyway.

Every takeaway shop or restaurant will be different, and SW aren't going the length and breadth of the country testing them all.

Agreed with Anna, this is always going to be guesswork anyway, nobody knows what ingredients they put in at The Silver River down the road from me, I never understood how they could give a value anyway let alone to the exact half syn.

I never finish a full portion of takeaway anyway. Half it. Add some extra veggies.
