Why do people say this to me?

Jubbly

Yo-yo dieter here for the gazillionth time
Went to the hairdressers yesterday to treat myself to a new hair do (blonde streaks and funky layers yay) and was discussing the diet with the hairdresser, as you do, and the woman next to me piped up and announced "I went on the Cambridge Diet and lost loads of weight then came off it and put it all back on again plus some more". I know she wasn't being mean and I know that it can and does happen but it really scares me. A lot of people just tell me I'll put it all back on again and now I'm thinking I should never have started this diet. I can't possibly face being heavier than I was to start with.

Well if you eat what you ate before you started the diet you will put it back on.

But if you make adjustments and change the way you eat then there is no reason you should put the weight back on.

I have maintained now for 8 months absolutely fine and there are others on here such as Karion who have been at goal weight now for well over a year.

I'm one of those who lost a lot and then gained a lot (although was still lighter than before). I think when you do a VLCD you have to see it as the *start* of a long term lifestyle change.

When I stopped LL after losing 4 stones I ate exactly what I did before, worse probably, so 100% deserved to gain my weight but it was a fault with me and not the diet.

I'm on day 4 on CD again now and am committed to makign the long term changes to my diet to ensure that I keep the weight off this time.

Go Mike x

Yep, we have to look at the way we eat, there is no point, for me anyway, to do this diet and go back to the foods I ate before. Thats not to say I wont have them, but not every day!!!!!

My food intake before was massive and loads of the bad stuff. Thats why I was Obese. My food intake will be structured and healthy, I won't have a sausage butty, a massive ham roll with mayo, 2 packets of crisps and a chocolate bar, and then come home to cook a massive meal and then have a bar of chocolate, all in one day ever again, and that was my diet before. I will look at what I eat and never ever be Obese ever again x

Any diet will be considered a 'failure' if you don't learn from it.

Personally, I'm still happy with my weight 8 months on - with previous diets, I would have piled the stones back on!

Something has clicked - I'm not perfect but oh, so much better than I was!!!!

If I can do it, anyone can!

I'm not religious but AMEN to Mike! :p

We have bad eating habits.. that's why we get overweight..

No matter HOW much we lose, if we don't CHANGE those habits of course the weight will go back on! We couldn't expect anything else.

That's the same with every diet.

What we need to do, is learn once we're at goal. :D it's like a new 'diet' all over again.. but instead of losing weight we'll be maintaining weight... ;)

We WILL do it! ;)

Thanks guys. I think I can do it or at least I can only try. It's just that some people make you feel so bad about yourself when you're proud of what you've acheived by telling you that you WILL put the weight back on. But they're just rubbish so I won't listen to them!!

Lynne - Good luck, I'm sure you'll do it this time!!

Jealous people have their own issues, which is nothing to do with you, hun.

Take it one day at a time and don't worry about next week, next month, next year!

good for you!

There is a great motivation tool that the americans use.. yes i know i hear you groan..

In short - if you imagine a bucket inside of you... and fill it with all things good about yourself each morning (by talking through it - in your head or outloud). then NO ONE can dump their rubbish in it! :p

Don't live your life according to others views.. do it because YOU want it! ;)

Hi

I have been at my goal weight for 1 year now and just like Mike said if you make small changes to your lifestyle then putting the weight back on will not be an issue. I used Cambridge to lose the weight and i used the time away from food to change all of my bad habits. Since coming off Cambridge a year ago i have not been on a diet! For the first time in my life i am not on a diet i just eat in moderation i do not cut anything out i just have less of it! What i found is that at the start of my weight loss i was a different person and food was a big pull for me but as i lost the weight my relationship with food became more and more reasonable and alot less emotional my confidence in myself grew and i felt alot more in control. Don't put to much pressure on yourself thinking about how am i going to keep the weight off! Take each day at a time.

Do people actually tell you that YOU WILL put weight back on plus more or are the just pointing out the inescapable facts that the majority of individuals do end up doing so?

One thing I have learnt about myself is that I was very good at putting my own slant on peoples comments. It wasn't them making me feel bad it was me making me feel bad!

Perhaps the comments are merely opening up an issue in your mind which is frightening but they are not actually saying that this will happen to you.

You have a big advantage over normal dieters in that you have found minimins and can benefit hugely from the lessons our members have already learnt. Minimins isn't the usual happy clappy clubs that give great pep talks but give you few clues on how to deal with your own thoughts, feelings and behaviors which is the crux of losing the weight in the first place and then keeping it off. :)

Just because 9 out of 10 dieters do gain back their weight doesn't in any way shape or form dictate that you will be one of them. You have advantages over other dieters in that you have reached the zone you need to be in to successfully diet. I wonder how many of those 9 out of 10 weren't actually in the zone and just making another healf hearted ill thought out attempt because I know they should be doing something.

Let me put it this way, I have had far more than 10 half hearted ill thought out goes at losing weight. I did not manage to lose all the weight I needed to and still worse I didn't manage to maintain the small amount of weightloss I did acheive which put me in that 9/10 band every time.

You could say that my history made me more likely never to succeed but that is absolute crap. I was never 'in the zone' on previous attempts, I never did LL before, I was never dieting as the same person I am right now.

In short, the sistuation I found myself in back in May when I started out can not be compared to any of my other attempts but by heck I learnt from the failures.

The comments others make about most dieters bunging all the weight back on is absolutely right. You have the choice as to whether this will make you give up and not bother because of the maths or whether you thank your lucky stars that they have reminded you so that you can consider how your life needs to change to make you that 1 in 10 that do not. :D

This isn't about what others say to you, it is about how you allow yourself to feel in response to them ;)

Wow!! Thanks chicken on a mission. You are absolutely right of course - the woman didn't make any insinuation at all about MY weight loss, my boyfriend always tells me that I misintepret people to make myself feel bad. I understand what you're saying about being in the diet 'zone' but I have never actually dieted before - this is my first ever diet. I just saw myself getting fatter and fatter over the years but knew when I decided to do something about it, it would be hard so I avoided it, and said when I did a diet, I would do it properly. I was so, so lucky that I found out about Cambridge, thought it would work for me, that it did and that I found all you guys on this forum. I am blessed and have had it so much easier than most of the people on here. I'm just scared that the person with self-control I have been over the last few weeks is just a temporary being and am realising that reintroducing food is even more frightening than going on the diet in the first place. I'm happy to SS forever really but I know it's because I don't want to face up to eating sensibly, which I find extra hard as I'm really fussy about food.

Sorry, my posts are really long and rambling....

I understand completely about the ssing VS conventional food.

I used to joke that if the could stick 2000 calories in 3 packs then I'd do that but not now.

The first time I lost control I didn't even try to say to myself that I ought to stop, I didn't even want to say that.

I worked out later that it was the same thing you have just talked about in that it is a control issue for me. Sub-conciously I wasn't sure that I would be able to stop so I didn't try so I wouldn't fail.

You can learn so much about yourself and why you do the things you do if you just take the opportunities you have.

I try to think my way around all negative thoughts to find a better way. It isn't easy and it is going to take some time but I am getting there bit by bit and so can you.

Do this and you WILL be the 1/10 person who maintains ;) :D

Lovin your posts by the way as they are really helping me too. As for rambling, you've seen the lengths of my posts

Jubbly-If only i could jump through the computer screen and eat that burger! Ummmmm its day 4 and this is the worst for me. I just fancy something to eat badly. That burger aww if only.

Sorry Laurie, it was a bit mean of me to choose it as my avatar wasn't it? I was trying to find a pizza (it's a kind of ironic statement) but couldn't find any decent piccies of one. Maybe I'll replace it with a nice big glass of milkshake instead!! But once day 4 is over you won't even notice it I'm sure. Hang on in there...

Hi Jubbly,
Like you i too am very worried about putting all the weight back on again. In fact, so much so that, now that i have lost a lot and feel a bit more normal sized, i keep saboutaging my ss attempts so that dieting to goal will take longer! Ie the longer i diet and attempt to ss, the longer it is before i put the weight back on again! I realise i am thinking very negatively, and i am trying to change this way of thinking, but i have never successfully dieted before, so i think i will never successfully maintain. Weird eh??

BTW, i am on day 4 of ssing, so its going ok at the mo!

here's a quote I like as it reminds me that this HAS to be a CHANGE of lifestyle (& that includes eating habits !) :

"if you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got"

soooo - if we go back to overeating / drinking too much / not exercising i.e. basically looking after our bodies...then we WILL put the weight back on !! as with ANY diet....

to combat this, I've kinda decided to use my time without food to think about WHY I abused my body and overfed it sometimes to the point where I felt sick :(

and then, when I come out the other side - slim and gorgeous - I will be strong enough to make the right choices - and SO WILL YOU :)

hope that helps....sorry for the ramble....

hugs
