Does anyone live in spain?

thanks for replying ladies, i am thinking of emigrating and wanted to ask a few questions. my parents live there but went out there to retire and we obv arent that age yet so wanted to ask a few questions about how easy it would be to get a job if u cant speak the lingo etc etc...more for my husband really whose in the lorry, courier industry...

I have looked into this a little and would strongly advise learning the language if you need to work there. Can you imagine trying to hold a job down here without speaking English. I suppose one option would be to work for a company over here that does deliveries to Spain, but youd still want the basics to converse with the companies delivering to.

thanks for your reply happe, i know at the moment there are alot of men that work at his company now as drivers mate who cant speak any or very little english and as they only need to help lift a cooker or something into a customer's house very little needs to be spoken as the office have people who speak their language if that makes sense..i didnt know if something like that would work. my parents have lived there 8yrs and have picked up on quite a few things but are still not fluent.

Don't live in Spain but my parents have a house in Denia, Costa Blanca and we go every year. I would definately say that you should be able to speak at least basic Spanish..... I guess it would depend on the area and if it's highly populated with ex-pats cos you'd prob be able to get a job in for example and English bar/restuarant..... but I personally think it would be respectful to learn Spanish..... that is one thing I think us English are not very good at is because the vast population can speak English we feel we don't need to learn the Spanish.... my Spanish is appaling but I make an effort to converse.... even at a basic level... like reading a menu/ordering food or asking the price of stuff in shops and greeting people....

I am very envious.... would love to up sticks and get away from this country.... it goes down hill more each year... but it's a big wrench with 3 kids.... not really got the guts to do it... but if it's just two of you (at the mo) then I'd say go for it.....

i completely agree and i am def someone who once i learn a new word use it when needed in a conversation when meeting or speaking to the locals.

my parents are in L'Estartit which is a little fishing town 2hrs north of bacelona and 2hrs south from the south of france. its actually catalan where they are. in the high seasons the english bars and restaurants, tourist information etc are over flowing i think if we did it my husband would like to keep in the same industry his in now if possible... i was thinking maybe their would be more work in barcelona obviously for him than a small town on the edge of the sea

Lou have a look at Andalucia information, tourism holiday destinations, accommodation, property and culture, Spain. and go on to the forum. ( I warn you the people are not nearly as friendly as on here but they are very informative)
It is VERY hard to find work there, still lots of racism ( where we have our house) with jobs going to the Spanish folk oh, lots of things. We were going to go and live their later this year but our youngest has just been accepted at the London School of Dramatic Art and will need every penny (and more) of our savings so it is on the back burner for a while. Definately go and look at the forum though, it covers every aspect of living in Spain. Also useful, lots of free lessons on the Web for Speaking Spanish.
