I know "crash diets" are bad but....

I so want to lose 2 1/2 st. before xmas and that is really the only way to do it.
I am thinking about creating my own vlcd of just 750cal of quality food a day with a multivitamin and calcium pill a day.

What do you all think???

Am I mad? Can I lose it in time (I currently weigh 11 1/2 st.)????

Help and advice needed and appreciated.

Hiya Cait

If you mean the Cambridge Diet is bad then I would argue that in fact it is a very safe way of losing weight when compared to other diets such as atkins and some of the weirder diets such as cabbage soup.

With Cambridge you get 100% of all the vitamins and minerals that your body needs and you lose weight both safely, quickly and with little or not hunger.

The Cambridge is THE most researched diet in the world and no paper has been released saying the diet is dangerous in anyway shape or form (unless someone else knows something i don't).

The diet you are thinking of doing could be dangerous as you would be badly missing out on protein which protects your lean muscle and hence I would urge you to either do an official VLCD such as Cambridge or Lipotrim OR a more "conventional" diet.

Thanks

M.

Why not just do Cambridge diet? I've lost 2 and a half stone... and i've been 'good' for 9 weeks. :D

Thanks for getting back. :)
I don't really have the cash for any official vlcd so I was thinking about doing a protein heavy carb light 750cal a day.
It's the best I figure I can do.............

ok.. well why not follow atkins then? low carb, high protein.. but no need to count calories? Again you'll see rapid weight loss.. and it needn't been too expensive if you shop well, and don't eat steak often! ;)

Counting calories, carbs and putting up the protein is risky.

Hi Cait, the CD is around £30 - £40 per week, is there anyway you could do it even for a month?? I know where I am you'd spend that just to get fresh fruit and veg and decent chicken etc anyway!! Good luck no matter what you decide to do...

Hello Cait

Have you worked out your BMI as if you are only 11 1/2 stone it is likely you are not overweight enough to healthily follow a VLCD. I think you have done the right thing in getting advice. There are some very knowledgeable people here who will help you. It may be necessary to revise your goal a little but whatever you decide to do I'm sure you will be fab by Xmas.
Best to be healthy and able to keep the weight off though I would say.

Best of luck

Dizzy.

Atkins is great for weight loss and if you go to ediets where I have been a member for a few years, you can get a copy of the healthy atkins which includes good fats, rather than loads of fry-ups! My friend lost about 6 stone in just under four months on Atkins, and despite regaining a stone between june 2004 when he finished and now, he is healthy and happy. As I was told, the VLCD is not for everyone, but losing weight is important so find what suits you, make sure you get all your nutrients, exercise lots and drink lots of water and even if you don't lose weight, you can't really lose.

Hi again Cait

I also meant to say to you that I think you diet will be incredibly difficult to stick to because you will be so hungry. You will probably end up cheating and not getting the lost you wish for anyway. it is really important to set yourself an achieveable target or you will not get the motivation of achieveing your goals.

You should certainly consider doing a suitable Cambridge diet programme for you. i think you will think the cost worth it especially as good multivitimins are expensive and you will not need to buy any expensive drinks, meals out, no alcohol, I think we are saving money whilst on this diet!

Hmmmm. This is something to consider. I am confused though, Cambridge is vlcd, right? And under 750cals? How would it keep me full-er?
(*note: I am not being sarcastic but genuinely inquisitive*) What makes Cambridge different??
You all seem to be really convinced of it.

Hiya Cait

The "science" of the Cambridge diet is that although you are having under 500 calories on the diet your body drops into what they call ketosis which basically means it burns fat in a different way. The main reason for this is that it is a total hunger supressant and therefore allows you to eat very few calories with little or no physical hunger.

If you were to eat 500 calories of say pasta and nothing else you would literally eat your lounge carpet after a few days as you would be soooooooooo hungry.

Hi Cait

I will let one of the Cambridge Diet Counsellors explain the science as I do not want to get it wrong. Or you could go to the Cambridge Diet website I'm sure it will be explained clearly there. of course you could also phone a local counsellor who I'm sure will be only to happy to advise and enlighten you. I think you are doing the right thing considering your options here.

Plus it would be extremely dangerous to diet at this level without the safety of complete nutrition. Your body would start to shut down and in fact you would more than likely stop losing weight as you would literally be starving yourself.

Hi Cait-

I was on Slimfast for a few weeks before the Cambridge. I was hungry ALL the time.

Now, on a third of those calories I'm rarely hungry (some hunger pangs mind, or an awareness of an empty tummy) but rarely that gnawing, craving hunger of other diets.

Thanks for all of the feedback. :)

I am still "weighing" my options. So, for the time being I think I'm just going to cut back my calorie amount and increase protein.
There is so much material to read about all of these diets.......its a bit overwhelming.

Is it appropriate for me to continue posting here about this?? Or can someone direct me to where I "should" be???

This site is great support for people following a whole host of methods for losing weight. There are sections for many of the types of diets all accessable from the home page :)

One thing you can be assured of is support in your weight loss journey because we are all in the same boat and this is a lovely friendly site.

Just remember when pricing up whether you can affort to do a VLCD just how much you would be spending on groceries to follow your own plan. I have made great savings on my shopping each week I was on only food packs :) Now I am eating again the shopping bill has gone up again

The weirdest thing about doing a foodpacks diet is that you really don't feel hungry although the emotional triggers to eat are still there. My mum and 2 of my friends are now doing Cambridge Diet afetr my successes on LighterLife and none of them are physically hungry. ;)

Good luck in whatever you decide to do. Maybe check out the GI threads because they will be of great use to you :)

Lol, I checked out Cambridge and LighterLife and uh, they don't offer it in my little corner of the world. :(

So, I suppose that is out the window anyway.

(In anticipation of a follow up question, I am an American in America).

Idiot that I am, I just realized that this is a really a UK based site.

Oh well, I hope I am still welcome. Dieting is the same the world over, right?!? ;)
