Hi

I spoke to my LL counsellor today and it looks like I will be starting my LL on 24th jan 08. I asked her to send me medical forms through the post so I can get that sorted. I called my practice nurse to ask her could she give me the medical she wasn't there so I left a message at reception. She then called me back and gave me the shock of my life, she told me that she didn't recommend it and that a lady has died whilst on this.

Can someone tell me if this is true, I carn't see a practice nurse making this up. I told her that I was still going ahead and that if I stay at the weight Iam I will die prematurley anyway. She then asked me why I couldn't just follow a healthy eating plan I said that why would I go to lighterlife if I could do that.

To say that this has shocked me is an understatement.

I dont do LL but I wouldnt worry too much, I cant see all the thousands of people who do it being allowed to if there was a high risk. It could be your nurse doesnt approve of VLCD's (a lot of people dont). And yes someone probably did die while on LL, but then people probably have died while on CD, WW, SW but their deaths arent necessarily as a result of the diet. Being very over weight is a much bigger health risk in the long term.

As I said I dont do a VLCD but Im sure someone who does will be able to reassure you more, but dont worry *HUGS*

Yes someone did die when she was on Lighter Life but she had other health problems too because she was so obese.

Dont worry VLCD are safe and you will always get someone who knows nothing about them but want to add their pennyworth. When I did Lighter Life my doctor was quite happy to sign the forms.

Do it and enjoy the weight loss.

I should imagine they are referring to the lady Matilda.

I remember when that happened and a few people asked questions at the time. From what I remember, the coroner didn't blame Lighterlife at all......but you know what the media can be like:rolleyes:

She was 33 stone of something and only 25? And a smoker. They found that she had a heart arrhythmia and was at a very high risk anyway :(

It seems that your medical practice have clung to the newspaper report of one person who died some time ago, without checking facts. You might like to ask them if they support exercise as I have heard of a number of people dying whilst running or playing football;)

Eeey Gaads, even heard of people dying whilst at work. Let that be a lesson to us all :D

People die all the time when on a diet but it doesn't mean that was the cause, unless it was a junk food diet!

VLCDs are used all the time in obesity clinics, but not all GPs acutally know anything about them, this doesn't really help obese people much.
Our GPs surgery don't get involved in any 'diets' they will only promote the healthy eating line full stop, but there is a surgery (NHS, not private) in our area who have a lighter life clinic twice a week so I went there. I guess they have decided to do it all in one place. The fact that an NHS surgery does a lighter life clinic must tell you something.

The nurse probably just doesn't have the facts, rather than lying. It is a shame really.

Call your LLC and ask if she can recommend a clinic, that is how I heard of our lighter life clinic.

When I started LL my Dr was away and I had to go to a Locum to get my form signed. She wasnt against LL but was not over the moon. I had dangerously high blood pressure.

However, since being on LL (8 weeks - lost almost 2 stone) I had to go back to my own Doctor and have my prescription reduced for BP and he was over the moon in what I was doing.

As has been said above, it's sad but highly likely that if anyone has died on the diet that they would have died anyway. Please don't let one case put you off as sad as it is I believe that you're much more likely to be a lot healthier on the diet rather than off.
