A Taster of LL ?

Paul...

What is your purpose for doing it? To start LL you have to be in the right mind-set. If you are ready to make a life-long change and lose more than 3 stone then why are you doubting yourself?

"cravings" only last the first 3 days... once you are in ketosis your hunger goes and you are genuinely not hungry anymore... The only hunger you will get is emotional hunger, which you learn not to feed with food.

Hi!

There's no contract as far as I know, when I did LL last year I paid £132 (double the usual fee) at my first meeting and was told that my las week would be free. Unfortunately I only got as far as week 4!

LL is quite a commitment. I went in to it thinking that I could deal with three months of not eating and that the rest of my life would be unaffected, I was just so wrong. I lost a lot of weight very quickly - over half a stone in a week which was quite a motivator. I gave up the day after I got promoted at work, I watched Man Utd play Fulham at CC and just wanted to be normal and celebrate with my mates, I had the worst tasting Hot Dog and a hot chocolate. I never could get back on track and stopped forking out the £66 per week. I tried again in August but I knew it wasn't the diet for me.

It may be worth you going through this forum, for every evangelical person who lost loads of weight on LL (or any other VLCD) I think you'll find someone who went nuts one day and ate half a grape and fell of the wagon. Its the same as every other diet really - it works for some but not for others. There are some really inspirational people on this forum who will answer your question better I think!

Good luck

LL

P.S - You will be hungry. When they say no food they mean no food, drinks, white tea or coffee, just four shakes and all the water you can drink!

Paul, I've done both CD and LL. With LL I wasn't tied in to a contract and could have stopped going any time (I switched to CD in week 12). The cost of CD would be around £50 for you as men get 4 shakes a day. I found them both great diets but you have to cancel your social life for the forseeable future. However, the payback is great as my life has completely changed and I went from a size 24 to a 12-14 in 20 weeks. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Why does he have to cancel his social life???? I didn't. I started LL in June and I have been to weddings, BBQ's, dinner dances and plenty of nights out and lost almost 6 stone. I didn't put my social life on hold I just modified my behaviour for a long term goal which I saw was worth a few months of a changed behaviour.
I managed and to be honest had a great time even without drinking and eating. You are at social engagements to enjoy spending time with people after all and not to eat and drink.
I was never tied in with LL and I paid the usual weekly amount for what I actually picked up that week.
It is a commitment to yourself Paul and I think you do need to be in the right frame of mind to want to help yourself but if you are then there is no reason why you can't lose the weight and lose it quickly. Perhaps is a good time of year as there aren't as many social engagements I guess.
Don't put your life on hold during the program though is my advice.
Good Luck.

I definately agree... putting your life on hold will probably not help in the bigger scheme of things... imagine depriving urself of food and at the same time saying "oh and you can't go out either":eek::eek:

I might have to murder someone if they said that to me

You CAN go out but you just do things differently... For example:

Before: I would go to the cinema in the evening, after having eaten my dinner at home already... buy popcorn, large coke, chocolates, errrm and maybe some pick n' mix... then stroll out feeling stuffed and walk into McDonalds and get a Big Mac meal... with a diet coke because I was feeling bad by this point!

Now: I have shake before I leave home, armed with my bottle of water... stroll off the cinema, watch the film (because thats what I went there for in the first place!!) and come home :)

You do everything the same, but take food and drink out of the equation :) I even managed to go the other week when my friends ate McDonalds!! and I was sitting thinking :p:p I really don't need that BigMac :D:D:D

Hi Paul

I'm somewhere in between...although I don't think you should cancel your social life I do think it changes to a certain extent. I lost just over 50 lb in the 100 days this time last year and for the 100 days our group certainly saw an increase in cinema attendance and a decrease in going to the pub/out to dinner with friends. I also noticed that there were some friends I really missed not having a drink when I was out with and some who it made no difference to - kind of makes you reassess your friends in this way. Not to say you lose any friends, just that you realise you might be more comfortable with/closer to some people than others.

On the flip side I found I wanted to do more interesting things to keep me amused which while not quite the same as going out for a drink or a meal did take the edge off things: I bought a vespa and spent some time terrifying myself on the streets of London; I joined a home exchange website and arranged home exchange holidays in Paris and Amsterdam; I spent time decorating my home. I definitely have much more energy and time (not thinking about food or eating or preparing food) when on LL.

But as Scot and LLClaire have said it is so about being in the right mental place to start LL. I had hit rock bottom for me and was the largest I'd ever been and had noticed I had started refusing social invitations because I didn't know what to wear or I felt so unattractive. When faced with a long-term loss of your social life in favour of staying home and eating some more or a short-term change in how you socialise I still think I made the right choice for me and have been so much happier since - my social life following losing the weight was also much much busier because I felt in the mood to be arranging things as well. Anyway - good luck if you choose to come on LL. This site is amazing for advice and general support - and being a man you will also lose weight very very quickly so you might find you don't need to be on it for as long as you think.

Yep I think this goes to show that everybody's different! There is no perfect diet plan which will give us everything we want all at once. This plan really works, and you lose loads of weight quickly, but it is quite hard core, and you have to have the mindset to enjoy, or at least tolerate that. If you go into it half-heartedly feeling like a martyr, you'll just be miserable, and give up, imho. The difference between this and Cambridge is that you will be part of a group in LL, and together you explore why you became so overweight in the first place (the idea being to avoid ever being so again!)

And of course there are loads of gentler plans out there, which will work fine for some people.

It's up to you to know yourself and work out what your priorities are. Best of luck!

I'm not tied into any contract. Only thing we did was pay for 2 weeks in week 1 which we then got back at the end of foundation (so week 14 cost us nothing - which was great as it was Xmas week!)

I was not tied in and only paid for one week up front and can leave at any time.

I tried CD which is just as good but didnt work for me as I needed the Counselling which went the LL.

I can see why you are frightened, have you been like a lot of us, been on every diet in the world and failed.

Perhaps one of these plans are for you. I found total abstinance, although difficult at first, helped as I then had to deal with my feelings instead of stuffing them down with food. It is not easy but at least I can now see a lighter life (excuse the pun) at the end of the tunnel.:)

PS we never beat you up for asking questions - I ask some silly ones sometimes.
