Right apparently it's because your brain has gotten used to adding up and so subconsciously add 5 + 12 which equals 17 you're asked to pick one and your brain automatically picks 7!!!

No idea how the carrot one works though but i thought it was pretty clever the brain doing that

However i do have a theory about the carrot......it's one of the few veg's with 6 letters in it!!!!

I think it's to do with the 'k' sound in the word six. You keep saying six and you find you pick a veg with that same 'k' sound.
