Ketostix - the interrogation!

Hi All,

I've just been to Boots to get some Ketostix (I'm on day 4 but just wanted to check), and I feel almost violated by the interrogation of the assistant. Does everyone encounter this and is there any way to avoid this in the future?

I had this at my local Boots, the woman was very rude. It was a long time before I went back in there.
I got my last lot from my CDC. They were much cheaper too!

Yeah a silimar thing happened to me in boots and after the inquisition she said that they didn't have any

I'm not looking forward to going to get another pack cos these ones are almost finished.

Well atleast I'm not the only one.

Have had a look on ebay since I started this thread and they can be bought of there for roughly the same price. I certainly won't be going back to Boots

CDC's can sell you ... ask, as they may have to get them in stock.

I have one tub Chika!

Boots usually interrogate but a lot of the private pharmacies just sell them to you. Having said that, I got my last ones from my local Boots and thy didn't question me but had to calculate how much to charge me for them -they charged £5.15 for 50.

tell em ur diabetic and need to check for ketoacidosis, when you bm machine ? ketones.
i hate that kind of staff find it very annoying and then im rude. i go to my local chemist these days as cos work as community staff nurse and we use them for work , dont get any questions.....
some of thses people think they are doctors. i remeber reading up on something once and asking for it at the chemist( in fact it was boots !!!), the girl fired hundred questions, so i corrected her mistakes, blasted her with science and made her look very silly . that was very satisfying ! maybe it is in the job description of people who work in the pharmacy dept of boots. !!!

Yep - same experience I pretended they were for my diabetic dad in the end - will buy them from ebay from now on, and everytime i wee on one i think of the lovely boots assistants

Ah yes I remember it well - if I wore a balaclava and held a gun to their heads I think I would have got the same response, fortunately for me my hubby jumped in and said" do you mind her medical history is for her Doctor not you" suitably embarassed I was given the booty and off I went EBAY is so much better x

WooHoo you are the best CDC ever - can I reserve them for monday?

HAHA Brilliant!! Way to go hubby!! :D

I get mine off eBay for about £5 and that includes P+P.
I had heard that some people were being asked a lot of questions and opted to avoid them.

i got questioned in tescos pharmacy too
in the end i lied and said i didnt know what they were for and that i was buying them for someone else who couldnt get out of the house
i hate lying but these are not restricted items - if they were dangerous id understand but you cant really overdose on the damn things can you!

I'm new to this do you need to get the sticks?

xxx:confused:

No you don't NEED them. Basically it checks that you are in ketosis - you wee on the end and if you are in K it changes colour from beige to pink!

Many CDC's have a supply to check you when you go back the 1st week - but some people like a supply of their own.

Other "symptoms" of ketosis are not being hungry (hurrah!!!) being cold and having awful breath ... mmm not so good!

I'm new to this do you need to get the sticks? Mandymoo

Hya no you do not need to get the sticks - some councilors have them there for when you go to weigh in but a lot of us vlcd peeps like to monitor our own "wee" to ensure we are in ketosis and following the diet to the best it can give us

Spitting MAD

This business of VLCD'ers being interrogated by pharmacy pipsqueeks seems to coem up regularly on the forum, & IT MAKES ME MAD!
As Slushy said, they are not restricted items. a 5yr old could buy them & as I've opined more than once
' If you wanted to but them to stick them up your nose then that is your business' More recently I've taken to suggesting that you offer to stick them up the shop assistants nose.

I take my hat off to Ameythists H & suggest that if he could make himself available to accompany the shyer dieters during their first attempt to run the gauntlet of the chemist-inquisition, he would be doing the world a great service.
For those beyond the reach of kind Mr Ameythist I recommend the other ploy of 'getting them for an old lady down the street' OR from your own CDC.

Rant over. Feeling better now. sorry.soap box moment.

On a more constructive note, is there anything that eg Cambridge head office could to to make an official request to boots that the behaviour of their staff to customers in this respect is not acceptable?

I had no idea that buying ketostix was a problem.

I've bought 2 lots in my local Boots and they sold them to me without saying a word.

I'll be prepared if they do say anything next time though :D
