Is tatric acid the same as citric acid?

Hi all,

I've got a really sore throat and have just bought some strepsils from boots. The chemist said that the sugar free ones do not contain citric acid. I've just read the ingredients listed in the leaflet and it contains tatric acid. Can I take the strepsils?

Or is tatric acid another anme for citric acid?

Thanks x

from what i can see, tatric acid is another name for tartaric acid and i usually used in wine making. In relation to ketosis, all i can find is a patent application which uses a formula containing tartaric acid to treat (end or reduce) diabetic ketosis. which is different to our ketosis, though i'm not sure exactly how.

That's pretty tenuous evidence, but it does suggest that tartaric acid may stop ketosis... however if i wanted to be really sure, i'd get in touch with cambridge direct and ask them.

Tatric acid is in the same family as citric and malic acid and therefore should be avoided on a ketogenic diet. :)

What a bummer! I've spent about £5 on sugar free strepsils and the chemist assured me that tatric acid is not citric acid.... i thought that malic acid was allowed?

Malic won't kick you out of ketosis, to the best of my knowledge, but I can't vouch for tatric.

When I had a sore throat, my CDC told me to go back to good ol' salt water gargle. And I have to say, as gross as it was, it worked. I made ice lollies out of my water flavouring so I could still soothe my throat as well.

Eewww to the salt & water gargle...... but I might just try it once I get home as I'm so desperate to sooth my sore throat.

I don't have any water flavouring so I can't make ice lollies :(

You know, I'm not sure that I'd get too worried about tartaric acid. If you need to suck on a sugar free Strepsil then do it. You can surprise me by telling me that Cambridge Head Office actually had the answer to this question, but I highly doubt it, LOL.

The whole citric acid thing is pretty complicated and experts have trouble explaining to us lay-people why it's thought to interfere with ketosis.

Citric acid may inhibit ketosis. Note the 'may' - there is some debate over this point. Possibly, citric acid might affect ketosis by affecting liver metabolism, primarily the Krebs cycle (if you want to blow your mind, look up the Krebs cycle up on Wiki :D). Some individuals report that citric acid prevents them from entering ketosis but does not affect ketosis once it has been established.

But there was a study, examining very-low-calorie diets, which found that the consumption of citric acid inhibited ketosis and increased appetite in many individuals. Ultimately, you have to find out for yourself whether citric acid has any effect on ketosis, appetite or fat loss on a ketogenic diet. You'll find lots of people who'll tell you that citric acid doesn't seem to have any effect on their ketosis or appetite - and just as many people who find it makes them drop out of ketosis at the drop of a hat - and ravenously hungry to boot.

And here, we're not even talking about citric acid but an acid which seems to be a close relative of malic acid - and malic acid won't knock you out of ketosis.

In short... suck 'em and see, maybe? (sorry :) Couldn't resist ;))

Lily, thanks for your reply. I'm not in ketosis yet as I restarted on Monday. I think that I will have to take the strepsils and like you say, find out for myself. I do know that small amounts of malic acid has no effect on me.

I will let you all know what the official view on this once I hear back from Cambridge HQ.
