Is Slimming World right for me...?

Hello everyone!

I have previously done slimming world (and weight watchers, and the 'make-you-feel-ill' shake only diet from the chemist).... what feel like MANY times before.

I have SO much weight to lose - and every time I try I ALWAYS fail. I just never keep going and end up back at square 1!

I probably have about 14 stones to lose - not entirely sure as the weighing scales currently are 'battery-less'!

Slimming World has been the only 'diet' that has ever worked - but I have only ever 'lasted' a maximum of a couple of months...

I am just currently recovering from an illness that has really got me down... my blood pressure is through the roof and I am off work.

I am hitting that time in my life where I feel that if I don't decide to do something about this extra weight - then it will rule my life forever. I struggle to do my job properly, NEVER feel sexy/pretty/good about myself, get out of breath easily, am ALWAYS boiling hot and having hot flushes, sweaty, embarassed about being so big and generally making me unhappy.

My (younger!) sister has just had baby and it's really made me re-evaluate things... do I want a baby? I've not had a period for 3 years because of my weight.... I'm getting to the point where it would be too late for me to have children - I'm not saying I definitely do, but I don't want to regret it if I don't decide until it's too late.

I'm newly married to a fabulous man who I adore... who is also very overweight. I get embarassed when we're out together - particularly in restaurants/cinemas/etc... He loves me for who I am - but loves his food. He is supportive if I want to lose weight - but we rely on food emotionally too much. If we feel down or even if we feel happy we celebrate or commiserate with food! He is extremely head strong - and VERY addicted to food (who am I kidding - that's me too!)

Both of our health is suffering... and I know we need to do something about it....

I work long hours and can't really tie myself to a 'group meeting' every week...

I know I would need support - someone hounding me and keeping me on track - I am VERY easily led... normally down the wrong path! I just feel that the journey I would have to make to become healthy is just too huge...

I was wondering if anyone does the 'slimming world online' - and if it is really worth the money? (Its between £60 and £80 depending on the subscription, for 3 months)

Thanks for any advice... I want to find my 'happy' and I don't think being 'big and beautiful' is it...!

Going to a group is the way to go if you can (you can go to a different group every week depending on what hours your working).
The reason I say go to group is then you get the tips, advice & most importantly the support to keep going.
I've only been going 5 wks but the advice im getting is to thing long term / lifestyle
you've done SW before and no it works, so go to group & log on here all the time and then you can start & stay on your journey

Hi Dolly
I can only agree with gottasleepnow
If you can get to class I'd recommend it
Everyone is there for the same reason, lose weight, get support, maybe make some friendships, learn from eachother and have of course the feeling that you need to keep on track because everyone that goes to class has that feeling, a kind of declaration....I don't think I'd have stuck to it without the support of my 'classmates' and the lovely people on here.
Whatever you decide, whether class or online, you'll always find support here

Well done for biting the bullet, good luck

hi hun welcome to minimins i had also followed every diet going but came back to s/w, i lost a bit myself and by coming on here, then i rejoined a class where i lost the last 1st 10lbs, i personally wouldn't pay £80 to join s/w online there is not a lot of support you would be better off coming on here and starting a food diary then someone can have a look to see if ur doing it right (its very easy to make silly mistakes which i have) then someone can point out anything that needs tinkering with, there is a thread on here explaining the plans in great detail and there is always someone to give you syn values if u can't find it on here. good luck xx

Hi there,

I too have tried and failed several times on several diets over the past few years, and have around 11 stone to lose. For me Slimming World is probably the best diet. I eat comfortably until I am full and have more self control than I had on diets like weight watchers. I just feel that this diet fits into everyday life and teaches you important new eating habits (I'm no angel though, I do slip up sometimes just as everyone does!).

The body magic part of the diet has really helped me to excercise too. Swimming/aqua aerobics is a good way to start excercising, particularly if you're larger I find that its better on your joints and back.

I would say that having someone to diet with is also helpful. If your husband is also keen on losing weight, you can support and motivate each other to do well.

I would say that going to class is important to get all of the imformation/books etc. I do it at home now as I don't have much money but I use this forum for support and keep food diaries/have little star charts to keep me motivated (star charts are a bit embarrassing but it really helps me).

Like you I am VERY easily led, unfortunately I haven't found a wonderful cure to get over this...it has just been mind over matter. I have just thought about how much I want to lose weight and used this forum for support. I also look at the inspirational photos for motivation if I'm feeling like giving up.

You can do it if you put your mind to it, regardless of how much you want to lose.
Whichever diet you choose...you can do it!! :)

Tazzy xx

hey Dolly! I am a SW member and it has so far, done what it has promised. I don't have as much to lose as you, but I feel the same way nevertheless. Fact is, if you don't make a change, nothing will change, so the ball is in your court!

What made you only keep it up for a few months? What sabotaged your diet? Let us here know and we can help to motivate you and spur you on. This is what the forum is for! :)

I really agree with this - having a look at where its all fallen apart before to help this time. I believe losing weight is less about the actual diet you follow and more about our emotions and behaviours. Have a think about whats held you back before and what you can do to change this.

I think sw online costs around the same as the classes and personally I think if youre going to spend that money you may as well go to class. You will still get access to all the online features if you go to class too. If you are a shift worker you can tell the leader this and they will make allowances. The first step to losing weight is making a committment to yourself to do this and you can do this by committing an hour a week to your weight loss.

I agree with all above, I think you need to think about what went wrong the last times and make sure you're in the right place emotionally. Your hubby will more than likely lose weight by default if you're cooking the SW meals.

For me group is amazing, the people are supportive but its also a place where you can give support back, makes me feel great when I can contribute to help someone else, we all have ups and downs on SW.

I found a local consultant who does 4 meetings a week so I can go to any of them and know I have a fab consultant, and now I am a familiar face in all of the groups cos I chop and change so much.

This forum is also an invaluable source of support get a food diary started and take positively any feedback you get.

It may seem like an insurmountable task to lose the weight but have a browse through the inspiration section and get a feel for how long it may take you, SW isn't a quick fix, it works and it works for the long term and it lets you live a normal life at the same time as acheiving your goal.

good luck xx
