Alternative to Shopping!

I have recently moved house and I'm still trying to get used to my new budget. Normally on a weekend, I'm out shopping regardless of whether I need anything or not. Subsequently spending a fortune. This has been a regular occurence for years. I need to think of an alternative to shopping. Any ideas anyone?

Gardening. Exercise classes. Library visit. Drive (or bus) out somewhere for a long walk. Batch cook for the for the following week. Make christmas goodies / write xmas cards nice and early.

Stay away from the computer though - internet shopping's even more dangerous than the real thing!!

What about something like drawing/designing some fashion/clothes That way you still get to keep in touch with the process and maybe have a great hobby come from it!

You need a new mindset - shopping is NOT fun!

Shopping is a waste of valuable time, going to crowded, noisy, dirty places, with lots of badly-behaved teenagers and screaming kids, having to struggle with public transport, or find (and pay for) suitable parking, having to carry all those heavy bags . . .

Your weekends are too precious for all that. Weekends are for lazing about, reading the papers, doing the crosswords, sorting out the cupboards, cooking new recipes, visiting art galleries (sometimes free), going for long walks, going to the library and finding new books to read (free!) . . .

Shopping is what other people do - you are far too busy doing much more interesting things!

Now just keep telling yourself that, and sooner or later you will find you believe it.

I sell and shop on ebay - if i dont have any money in my paypal from selling, i cant shop!!!! Its a good way to become a bargain hunter, takes ages sometimes to put things on - and makes me feel good!

For activities - do a clear out, tidy the garden, tidy the house - make some new SW recipes, pamper yourself, relax with a good book!

Bookmarking this thread and shall await more great ideas!
I'm not one for going out shopping, but often find myself sitting around without much to do! Cleaning the house needs to be done, but you can't do that all the time!

Try knitting some scarves for Chrissy pressies. If you pop to your local Haberdashery might have the new spanish yarn that you don't even knit you just pick up stitches!

How about batch cooking one weekend, drive to a beach (fab in winter) for a bracing walk then back for an Options hot choc and read a good book.

Take your camera to your local park, one guy did this and managed to photograph so many birds he's now addicted!

Borrow a friends kids, go to the park and kick up some leaves, have hot picnic soup. Ride a bike.

Clean the house thoroughly and then reward yourself with a chick flick.

New house means new ideas, try making some mood boards and then browse some Charity shops for nick nacks!

Some good examples there. I know the area a little where you are. I would second the exercise. Nothing better than a bracing walk, and it don't come much more bracing than a walk along the sea front at Shields!

I would walk along the leas - as far as Marsden if you're up to it. Also take a camera and get snapping in and around Marine Park is a possibility?

You could have the occasional treat by visiting the Royal or Dilshad on Ocean Road (top curry, lowest price lol)

I'd also investigate the magnificent Customs House, you could become a friend.

Actually, I think I might move to South Shields now:eek:

No shopping for me today - it was cold and dull so I sat with the crosswords, and a bowl of sliced apples, and watched the Fred Astaire film, followed by The Importance of Being Earnest.

I know it's a cliche, but they really don't make them like that any more!
