running advice

I have been running now for 3 months and worked myself up to nearly 3miles (5km) in 30 mins. (never really run before apart from school 20 years ago so impressed with myself) the idea was to lose weight but not happened yet :-(

Wanted to sign up for a race of some sort but not sure where to start or how to go about it. and how long I should try running for (5km or more)
Has anyone got any advice?

Thanks

Im guessing now that youre running, youve started building up muscle now, and as that weighs more then fat...Is that about right or have I got that wrong D:

Thats really impressive jac76, it's taken me 5 months to run 5k in 36 minutes! My aim is to do the Race for Life 10k at the start of May. My gym instructor has set me up with a new interval programme to initially help increase my speed - 2 mins jog, 2 mins run. Do you run on a treadmill or outside? If it's on a treadmill, the next steps are to either run on an incline, or to run outside - it feels really different. I'm going to slowly increase my running outside by a few minutes per week so I can buil up my stamina at the same time. I've also been advised to put more weights in as this will also help with the endurance. Hope this helps a bit.

I used to be into running and it great. Don't pay attention to the scales as exercise is brilliant and your shape will still shrink even though the scales won't show it, if you know what I mean. It's brilliant for defining your arse, waist and legs. I got such a tiny waist and it will increase your metabolic rate too.

Do you live in a city? I'm going to do the Manchester 10 k next year, I feel it's something to train towards. Just go to the Great Run website to see what runs are in your area.

Just to add, if you can run 5k I find that any longer distance is fine as your body is fit enough and will appreciate the challenge. Good Luck :)

thank for replies.
i am running outside, I don't belong to a gym so never tried a treadmill.
Not noticing any difference in size yet but will keep going and hopefully it will start to show.
I wasn't sure about pushing myself but now I think i will try to run for longer as I am not as out of breath doing 5k or maybe upping my pace
