Advice running

I have been running now for 3 months and worked myself up to nearly 3miles (5km) in 30 mins. (never really run before apart from school 20 years ago so impressed with myself)

Wanted to sign up for a race of some sort but not sure where to start or how to go about it. and how long I should try running for (5km or more)
Has anyone got any advice?

Thanks

hi there

Just back from a run - boy its windy!

Firstly brilliant to get to 5km and 30 mins. That's fantastic.

I highly recommend a training plan and I was on the asics site earlier and they have a plan you can create tailored for you. Its here My ASICS. Hopefully you will see that running the same distance at the same time isnt as productive as varying the distance/speed.

If you can join a club so much better. Most have a weekly run and they will have a group running at say, 4 miles at 10 min miles and another doing 6 miles at 7m30 so join the one which suits. They are not full of super athletes and people give freely of advice.

Start with something manageable - nothing wrong with a 5k. Id suggest avoiding x-country until you are capable of much more.

Find an event on Runnersworld web site - has a good search tool so you can find the right distace race perhaps not too far from you. Mind you when I did triathlons I used to go to races miles away and make a weekend of it...

Hope this helps

I get my races from runnersworld website. I find once I am signed up for a race it motivates me that much more to improve my performance. Hope you find a 5k nearby :)

find your local parkrun.
