1/3 superfree rule interpretation - anyone know definitively?

Last night at group our consultant did a refresh new member talk for everyone.

When she got to the bit about the 1/3 superfree rule, she said it had to be 1/3 of the plate - SEPERATELY.

I questioned this and said that of course, if you were doing spag bol/curry etc with passata/tomato and added veg etc then you didnt have to have it separately, as long as it made up about a third of your overall meal it counted - but she said no - you absolutely must include a separate 1/3 plate portion of veg or salad.

Normally, if my consultant isnt sure on something, she will back down, or say maybe you are right - but on this occasion she was absolutely adamant she was right.

And I am adamant she is not!!

Can we lowly members email SW directly to get an answer on this? I just hate not knowing who is right!!

Incidentally - she also said that the 1/3 superfree rule was a mandatory part of the red and green plans as well - and that this was a change bought in at the same time as extra easy. I disagree again - I know lots of people on here that dont like veg do green and original so they dont have to eat it. 1/3 superfree is about portion control - and with green and original, portion control comes from having measured amounts of of you HEB which are the carbs or meat that are not free food as part of the plan you are following - there should be no need for the 1/3 superfree.

i didnt persue that one too much - I dont do those plans and can only cope with one battle at a time!

So - who agrees with me? Or who thinks my consultant is right (in which case I have lost over 3 stone in 18 months despite apparently doing the Slimming World plan completely wrong!)

I'm pretty sure my consultant said the 1/3 free could be any part of your meal.

as with the 1/3 superfree on green days I asked my consultant about this cos I thought when I first started that the 1/3 rule applied to green days too but she told me it didn't as your already limiting your meat intake.

My consultnat says 1/3rd superfree with all plans & tells us to put it on the plate first - so i guess she's agreeing with yours.

I do tend to have a portion of veg seperately even if its soag bol as the veg cooks down so much.

Having said that, you have lost a load of weight so until that stops being the case, don't worry too much

Surely as long as you're meal consists of 1/3 superfree its fine as its all going the same way!!?? Other wise meals such as curries won't be EE because the veg will be mixed in with the meat & sauce & not separately...

I do SW at home as of April so I can't ask my C about the other query but I used to do Green all the time & I was never told 1/3 of those meals also had to be superfree.

It's got to be 1/3 of the whole meal (ie not separate) or else most of the SW meals in the mag would de facto NOT be EE!!!

I can appreciate them pushing you to eat as much SF as possible but I do think she's wrong on this. As long as you eat 1/3 of your meal SF that's fine. Maybe she's doing it to try to make it easier to explain to newbies?

However you are "supposed" to eat 1/3 SF with Green and Red according to the book, its just its pushed less strictly as youre already limited in other ways whereas with EE you really DO need to push yourself to restrict your intake of other stuff.

I tried that argument with the examplet recipes too - of course slimming world dont help themselves here by screwing up occasionally - in the supercharged slimming booklet that comes in the new member pack one of the meals was fish, chips and peas so no superfree at all (peas are not superfree).

A couple of the recipes in the booklet had salads hiding in the corner which she said proved that you must have a seperate helping, and she just kind of sidestepped the fact that clearly the leaflet wasnt 100% reliable as there was a blatantly non EE meal in there (really dont think a tiny chunk of lemon sat on top of the fish can count as 1/3 superfree!!)

I noticed you got a reply from SW about the chips on a red day issue - was that just by emailing them?

I'm really getting a bee in my bonnet about this!!!

Yeah I emailed the enquiries email on the website Slimming ( online dot support at slimmingworld dot com ) it took them 3 weeks to get back to me but I reckon you should email them to get it in writing. Ha. a lemon wedge as my 1/3 SF, might try that this w/e as Im having fish & chips anyway :D

With my first consultant she said it was anything at all that way on your plate, even if it was cooked as part of the meal. So that's what I did and lost nearly 2 stone. If you can't do this then I'm stuffed cause I hate salads without loads of salad cream and my veg has to be in my meal!

Jeez, I do green days & there is no way I could force myself to eat 1/3rd superfree with every meal.

Whats the difference? It's all going in our mouths!

maybe you should look in the SW magazine and point out any meals that dont have 1/3 seperately. i dont know how this works when they sell "one pot meals". the meals are definitely not one pot and side order. or what about the Curry books. they dont say have a side order of 1/3.

It kinda makes sense when you think about it though. When you make a Spag Bol you add a load of veg in, and that veg cooks down to mush, breaking down alot of the fibre content, making it easier to digest, and therefore you burn less calories digesting it. So you probably do need to have either far more veg in that spag bol that 1/3rd or add some more veg to your plate.

But in SW's one pot cooking book, it doesnt say when you serve the meal, add 1/3 superfree to meal. I can see what you are saying though. But you have some Superfree that needs to be cooked before you can eat it. i would not eat brussels and butternut squash raw. i would have to cook it.

What Tara said! The rule is 1/3 superfree, not 1/3 raw superfree - so I don't see how there's a difference between having the third in a curry (for example) or having the third as boiled veg next to a veg-free curry.

Mind you, I often do have an extra salad, just because I think it's wishful thinking to count (for example) my spag-bol sauce as a 1/3rd - but that's because I like a huge heap of pasta, so I suspect my sauce is more like a 1/4 of the meal, rather than because the veg in my spag-bol doesn't count!

And you aren't advised to add 1/3 SF to a bowl of SS soup ;)

I'm just saying i kinda get the logic - not that i agree with it :)

However - as has already been said - the recipes in the mags & books don't always have enough superfree in them - which is totally rubbish & proves that SW will bend their own rules for asthetic reasons.

And superspeed soup is not a SW recipe so don't think that would stand up in court :)

I am just playing devils advocate here!!
