Saving calories

Do any of you save calories for the weekend?
For example only eat 1100 a day instead of 1200 then have an extra 500 on a weekend for alcohol maybe!

hm i dont think you can do this? your body only has something like a 12 hour calorie memory or something, i might be wrong...

Yes I think I'd read that - you must eat 1200 every day - if you want extra - you need to earn them!!

Oh, I've never heard of that 12hr memory before?

I remember on sw world there was always a cufuffle about whether it was ok to save syns for the weekend. The official rules changed to say no, you had to use them or lose them, but lot of members still saved syns for the weekend and still showed good losses.

Might it just be seen as a similar way to how some on here have described calorie cycling....eating well through the week and then allowing a higher amount of calories at the weekend to 'confuse' you system into think there is endless food, before withdrawing it again?

I think I am torn on this subject...*wanders off to ponder*

Calories have a 12 hour life span. If you save them up you run the risk of putting back on the weight you have lost during the week. :)

Especially if u are using them on alcohol, As alcohol tends to go down as fat rather than be used as energy x

Debates and theories aside, I think it's a much healthier frame of mind to take each day by day. If you do have a night on the booze, or a fancy dinner out, just enjoy it for what it is - don't go restricting yourself for days on the lead up, or 'punishing' yourself for days after. I work on no more than a 24 hour window - if I have a calorific day/night I will usually factor in an extra long walk on the day, or the next day (perhaps 2000 calories) but if for any reason I can't, I just carry on the rest of the week as normal. What I DO do, is try to log EVERYTHING on MFP, even when it hits scary numbers ;) Gives me a much better idea of the whys and wherefores of this journey :)x

Whatever works for you is best.

Personally I take my calorie allowance over a week. I'm a great believer in calorie cycling to keep the body from getting used to a set amount. If I want an extra 500 cals on a Saturday I have them as I know there will be a couple of non-hungry/busy days in the week when I barely touch 1000-1200.

The weight comes off when its ready not when your calorie intake says so. Frustrating I know.

Absolutely agree with this! Cannot express how much! The biggest and most important part of my journey has been taking responsibility for my food choices and dealing with them as and when they happen - then moving on! I find it so much more realistic and means that I try and make better choices as and when I can.

That said, at the start of my plan I was eating less during the week and more at weekends. I still lost considerable amounts but I was a much bigger person then. I still do it every now and again to shake up my metabolism as tranquility says. It can be good for a plateau occasionally and it certainly doesn't have any negative effects. If I've plateaued for a long time I usually see a good loss after a slightly more indulgent weekend (100-200 calories over target).

Wow, Morrigan, have you lost all that weight since last October?! You are officially my new idol!

Thanks so much for all your replies :)

I think just trying to find what works for me best is probably the best way to do it.

Week one I lost 2 and 1/4lb and ate 1200 a day and didn't eat my exercise calories back.
Week 2 I ate 1200 a day and didn't eat my exercise calories back and gained a pound and a quarter
I am hoping this week is better I have ate my exercise calories back every other day so fingers crossed I get a good weigh in Monday x

Thank you!! :D That has given me an enormous grin, not unlike that little green smilie! I have lost the majority of it since January as before Christmas it was more a case of 'damage-control'. It has been a slow and steady loss though - my motto is 'just keep going' no matter what!
