Sweetening up!

I've tried for a week now to enjoy my brews without sugar but I'm struggling. I always had a dislike to the after taste of sweetners though so I've not tried them for years.

Is there any out there that taste as close to sugar as possible?:D

I prefer the granulated stuff to the tablets, and find I need a little more than I would sugar - maybe a heaped tsp of sweetener per normal tsp sugar! X

Canderel sugar is better than most, Splenda is my favourite but they are both quite expensive compared to some others.

I only like the silver spoon sweeteners, i find the others leave an awful after taste xx

I've tried half spoon for my hubby to have in his tea, it's half sugar and half sweetener so you use half as much. It's good for weaning off proper sugar

My hubby weaned me off my half a tsp of sugar in my tea. He said there was no point in only having half a tsp so he wasn't giving me it anymore whenever he made the tea. He's a mean man! Anyhoo ... it worked! I have been sugar free for over a year now and I much prefer the taste. Coffee is a different kettle of fish and I need 1 sweetner. My FIL weaned himself off by having 1 small biscuit with his tea/coffee to sweeten his mouth I guess lol and then cut back to half a biscuit then nothing.

As for what sweetner is the best .. I personally prefer candarel or splenda, the cheap ones taste salty to me?! Perhaps I'm just odd :giggle: I also find them sweeter than sugar so only use half the amount.

Good Luck :)

I went bold turkey on sugar in tea years ago and wouldn't ever go back now! Coffee was harder though easier with black coffee I don't know why! I don't use sugar in anything now!

I agree, I find candrell or splenda the best but have managed to wean myself off suagr or sweetner altogether, if i ever pick up the wrong cup and taste by accident it tastes horrible like syrup with it in now. I find i had to use a little less than sugar too otherwise it was over sweet.

When I first did SW a few years back I drank maybe 3 or 4 cups of tea a day and had a tsp of sugar but decided when I started that there was no way I was wasting 4 syns a day on sugar for my tea! So used the granulated candarel stuff which was so disgusting I decided I'd go without and have been sugar free ever since. Now if my husband accidently gives me sugar in my tea I literally spit it out as it tastes horrible.

Think cold turkey is the best way to go!

I much prefer granulated.

yeah think I'll give another week or so and see how I get on. I used to have 2 sugars in my tea before going down to one now that tastes awful now.

oooh my grammar is terrible, it's meant to say 2 sugars in my tea tastes awful now. But I can't seem to wean myself off the sugar completely.

it took me a few weeks, of 1 sugar, then 1/2 then nothing, its worth it if you can do it :)

I have tried to quit sugar also, I'm down to having two Hermasetas... whenever hubby makes tea he tries to be sneaky and just adds one! I hope you find something you like as tea without it imo is ewww

I have never had sugar in tea as it makes me feel sick if I get wrong cup. Coffee was difficult and many times I tried to drink it without sugar as I didn't like sweetener either. This time I have managed it and don't think I would go back to using sugar or sweetener. All I can suggest is keep trying and even if you do go back to having sugar give it another go to give it up. I managed eventually.

I went on half spoon before switching to sweetners. I really liked it. A good idea.

I tried before, but found I just wasn't enjoying tea or coffee and gradually leaving more and more in each cup. Eventually I was drinking less than a quarter of a cup and throwing it away.

I think it is the word I can never pronounce, remember or spell (Aspartame or something?) that people find offensive or at least some do. I probably do, but find it less offensive than unsweetened drinks!

Having said all that, I usually have 1 "proper coffee" per day so could probably syn the sugar anyways! - I do miss cream though:( but that's a whole new thread lol...........

I like silver spoon Sweetness and Light granulated sweetner- I use it to sweeten fat free yogurts etc and find it ok.
And yes, aspartame is the sweet component which replaces sugar. I know what you mean about tue aftertaste, as I drink sweetner in coffee- definitely go for granules over tablets :)

I can't tell the difference between Xylitol (Perfect Sweet) and sugar - its VERY expensive though - but I have it on my weetabix, or strawberries and it has the same mouth feel / crunch as sugar. Still has syns though, but half that of sugar.

Wouldn't half spoon do the same job at a fraction of the price?
