The science behind

Hello, not sure if this is the right place to ask this. I did the old SW diet years ago and lost a couple of stones.
While I'm waiting for my new books, I've been wondering what the rational behind the SW diet is. At the time it struck me as mainly portion control, the free foods being things such as broccoli so not much chance of overeating on that!
But the red and green days, does it have an element of low carbing? I wonder if anyone has a good idea why it seems to work?

I think I once read somewhere that the alternating between red/green kept your body working harder to produce the right enzymes to process what you are eating.

On green days it makes carb processing enzymes and then prepares more enzymes ready for to process carbs the next day but you then switch to proteins so it has to rush to make protein processing enzymes burning up more calories in the process.

No, nothing as complicated as that because you don't have to switch between the plans - you can do green every day for the rest of your life if you want to. Also SW has never been about not eating carbs and proteins together.

Basically some foods fill you up for longer relative to their calorie content - so 250 calories of pasta or meat will fill you up for longer than 250 calories of chocolate. Such foods are free foods so you are encouraged to fill up on these making you less likely to overdose on empty calories. Having one third of your plate as fruit/veg helps ensure you don't overeat these. Healthy extras are there to promote a healthy balanced diet by ensuring you get recommended amounts of calcium and fibre, and you have syns to make sure you deprived and fall off the wagon. I haven't explained it very well but there is a lot of information about the science behind the plan on the SW website.

That's interesting PatchworkPuss. I also received the new SW books yesterday and have spent quite a long time working out which he /b and what extra easy ...
I am certainly a 'funny age'! but it seems very complicated to me - I'm glad I have the original green book still from about 1993 with 2 for you and 1 extra (choice of cheese milk etc and bread.)
I know that I need to really reduce the amount of time I spend thinking about food and instead start living and I'm wondering if the new SW plan will be helpful for that?
(Or am I just making excuses?)
