So why aren't more people doing Dukan?

Following on from an earlier post, and a conversation with my sister and a friend, both of whom have weight issues, I am incredulous that more people aren't doing Dukan. Its as if they don't believe you can't loose weight eating this way...and then there are the excuses, I'll start after the weekend/the Hungarian going away party/when the kids go back to school. Oh come on... ( well you know, can't be healthy can it, loosing a stone in a month - thats what I think they are thinking)

Is it me?. - am I becoming evangalistic - or is it that they would rather pay Marjory Dawes at fat fighters another fiver every week?

Well, they can eat dust. I'll take the salmon. Oh yes, you can stuff your cuppa soup, fibre bars and ruddy rice cakes. Least we forget spinach soup or red cabbage plate.

When I tell friends what I am doing (and I only tell close friends) they listen with interest but I can tell they are sceptical. None of the friends I've told had heard of dukan before, even those who are always on one kind of diet or another.

I think dukan had a leap in popularity generally in the UK around the time the press were reporting Kate Middleton used it to slim for her wedding (this is how I first started hearing about it, though I realise it has been around for years). My guess is those people who started it around then and have stuck to it are probably seeing good results now. So maybe the diet will have another spurt in popularity as those who were previously sceptical observe the successes of those around them.

On the other hand it is nice knowing dukan doesn't have a big following, like we're in on a big secret that everyone else is missing out on!!!

Nice being smug isn't it!

I think theres a place for every diet, what suits one person wont suit another I also thing its natural to be passionate about whatever diet is working for you but it doesnt mean other diets arent just as good

LOL Starlight!

While I obviously love eating the Dukan way, or I wouldn't have hung around so long, most people here are on phase 2... Many Dukan followers alas forget that there are FOUR phases to this diet, and phase 3 is the really crucial (dare I say "difficult"...).

So I can but urge all of you (and me foremost!) to focus on whatever bad/lazy habits got us the weight we reached before reaching phase 3... The euphoria of fast easy weight loss is wonderful, but is far from the end of the story.

I'm another one that wished I had discovered this diet years ago - as it really seems to suit my body.

18 days in and I am 9.5lb down. :D Totally amazing - particulary after really struggling to lose anything for the past 5 or 6 years or so.

I never thought I would be able to stick to what is quite a restrictive diet in many ways - but for me seeing the fab results is spurring me on. Can't believe that I now have less than a stone to go to my target!!

Dukan is fab - although I have to say the support from this forum is invaluable - so thanks everyone. I couldn't do it without you ;) x

I think the fact it is restrictive is what puts the majority off. You have to be 100 percent committed from the outset which is quite scary, considering as jo says, the losing weight part is only the beginning.

I have had loads of people asking me what diet I am on and when I tell them what dukan involves, and how brilliant it is, the negative reactions are always the same.

One of my sisters isn't willing to give up alcohol, the other chocolate. And yet they have struggled with their weight all their adult lives like me, and are miserable. Surely being slim is so much more rewarding than chocolate or booze?

Perhaps it is fear of failure? Just find it such a shame when they could benefit hugely : (

They are 2 of the 3 things I didnt think I could do without, Wheesht - the third being crisps. To be honest I have not really missed them - Although I have been desperate for a packet of crisps on a couple of occasions, I have been desparate to lose weight for soooo much longer and I am able to prioritise that (whilst munching on chicken!)

It's the best diet in the world in my opinion, no question and I think the one that psychologically speaking sets you up for lifelong success much better than a meal replacement diet where you're not eating proper food. You learn what foods do what, what carbs do, which foods are higher carb/higher sugar etc rather than just having a shake three times a day! Also the addition of oat bran is key, and oat bran has so many benefits other than being a great source of fibre.
I agree every diet takes commitment and I guess whatever works for you works but I totally agree with you Tessa! Life's too short for 'synthetic vegetable soup/chocolate shake', 'cabbage soup', 'grapefruit' or 'syrup and cayenne pepper'!!! Give me salmon, muffins, chicken, dukan bread etc! x :)
Here's to success whatever we're doing!

Its not perfect by a long shot.

Its expensive, its time consuming, its restrictive, causes constipation, its hard work.

All diets are hard work and thats why most people fail, diets dont fit in with the life they want now.

We see so many threads about people wanting to do this, drink that, and then being incredibly rude when people suggest its not the best idea, then seem to hold everyone here (and not themselves) accountable when theyre not losing

I think most diets will work if followed correctly and don't think Dukan is necessarily better than another.

I do think that Dukan gives faster results than others and that's why it has such a huge fanclub BUT stabilisation has to be done on this diet as with all of them and I think that's where things are harder.

A bit of personal experience (feel free to skip to next paragraph;)). When I did WW (8 years ago), I got sidetracked by my Mum's illness and didn't stabilise the weight that I lost. It didn't go on immediately, but slowly over the next few years. When I started Dukan last year, I was a kilo short of my WW starting weight, so about the same start-off point. I would have tried Weight Watchers again, but I got my knickers in a knot about diabetes and the risk of having it from being overweight - there's a fair bit of it in my family - so I wanted to get to a healthy weight asap and someone mentioned Dukan to me.

Losing weight is easy (espcially on this one - even very light ketosis wipes hunger out) but keeping it off is a life-long challenge, albeit an enjoyable one for me so far.:D

Dukan definitely gets the thumbs up from me, especially for the oatbran (and this forum). I suspect that I could have lost the weight on another diet (because I really, really needed and wanted to lose it and having your head in the right place is a good start) but this has hard and fast rules, and as long as you follow them, you won't go wrong (applies to all phases, although, sadly, info is a bit thin on the ground for phase IV).

There are lots of success stories for the main slimming clubs, but one size doesn't fit all and some will do better on Dukan (those that can do without cheese/fruit/crisps/choc/alcohol, etc) than others. As well as being popular just now, it's also had lots of negative press (and loads of incorrect info given) so that will make people wary/roll eyes/refuse to hear more, etc.

Sorry for the waffling...

I'm very enthusiastic about Dukan, but do not tell people I am on a diet. my M in L is staying with us at the moment and can tell that I have lost weight. All she has spotted that I am doing different is not eating potatoes or bread.
I got back last week from a 16 day cruise. I followed a lot of Dukan advice in my choice of food, but enjoyed a dessert each night and had 3 or 4 alcoholic drinks each day. Weight gain at the end was 2lbs. By getting back on track in the week since getting back I am now one pound less than before my holiday. I couldn't have done this without Dukan and I love not having to go to a slimming club. Only 2 and 1/2 lbs to go to target.
My next job is to persuade my daughter to give it a go. She has a few stone to lose, but has not found how to lose it and keep it off from attending different slimming clubs.
