Refeed for an op. How?

Tinkerbellarella

overworked underpaid mum!
Okies so the op is next wednesday, i am thinking of doing ts till tuesday, meal in the evening then i'm nil by mouth as i am first on the list being the complicated one! Is this wise though? Or should i be droping to working soloution for a few days before? I am not sure. I am taking a 2 week break (at my own discrection) and i will be probably using my fitness pal to track at 1500 calories per day till i am back as i don't want to undo everything but i need some boundaries for myself. Does anything sound sensible here?

you should be eating normally for at least a week before op, unless you have any guidence from hospital.
I am not an expert but is exante meal replacements. if so they really not enough for you to prepare for surgery.
I would really check with someone from company but would have thought that would be the case as a very low call diet is probably not enough in preparation.
you would not want to make yourself less able to cope with surgery, and could delay your recovery and healing.

Hi,
I had surgery last year and the advice I had was to eat a normal diet. I did Atkins but added a few extra carbs in to be safe. Once I felt well enough ( which was really quickly as it was just a small surgery) I went onto Atkins and was not allowed to do VLCD for three months.

Of course it depends on the type of surgery too as to how long you need to do this for.

when i had my gallbladder out I discussed it with my surgeon and he said as long as i was out of ketosis for the actual surgery then waited until I was properly healed afterwards I would be fine . The healing is the major thing here , your body needs calories to heal itself so dont go back onto TS too soon afterwards , i think I took 3-4 weeks but that was only keyhole surgery so you may need a bit longer for larger surgery

Hmmmm. It's 1-2hours of surgery, open as it cannot be done by keyhole surgery. See after the kids were born i was back to normal in 2 weeks, driving (with doctors consent) 10 days after surgery. It's the prospect of a massive gain that is scaring the brown stuff out of me. I have worked too hard to chuck it all in now. Scared of going back on sw in case all i do is gain and never stop gaining :(

you will gain but you can control it and you know you have a big first week loss when you get back on it :D Try following SW red days , I did them when I came off CD and didnt gain apart from a small initial recarb :)

Yes but what about ur hexb? What did u do there? As mine was always wholemeal bread see. And yes ur quite right, i could do it, i've done red days before. (and bns chips!yum!) i think ur on to something there batman! :D

Ah see i really struggle eith breakfast, as i either had a cooked breakfast a couple times in a week or just had yoghurt. Def something i will be looking into though. Coz i know i've done it before so it can't be that hard

The main component u need for healing is protein, so ensure plenty of that! Prior to surgery I suggest u eat a well balanced healthy diet to prevent complications post op. Also ensure ur well hydrated. Research suggests that good nutritional and fluid intake prior to surgery encourages healing and prevents post op infections, nausea and vomiting. Ensure that u drink plenty of water right up until ur fasting time too :)
As long as u continue to eat a sensible well balanced diet then u should be fine!
I am a qualified nurse but i strongly advise to take some expert advice from ur surgeon and nurses prior to ur surgery as they are the specialists in the field of surgery ur having. U should have a consult with ur surgeon the morning of surgery to go through any last questions etc.
Hope all goes well!!! Xxx

Thankyou kdogg :) i think i may see about sw red days from the weekend perhaps. I have no problem with healthy eating as it was almost second nature on sw, i just stopped losing. Obviously i want to be well, need to be well running around after 5 kids. So will speak to the surgeon before my op about how long to take off, and will probably follow her guidance. I haven't really thought about the pre op bit much :/ have not really thought it would be too much of an issue as long as i am not in ketosis for the op.

I have had 3 major operations this year and had started exante before the first 7 hour long one . While not a doctor I felt that exante or any high protein diet would help me recover quickly so was on the diet a month before.

Your surgeon had already said ok too that as long as you are not in ketosis . In his advise you could continue up to the day before .

Personally was on a drip for a week as very Ill .
After your op you are likely to crave carbs partially due to medications . I felt very nauseous for some time and ate a lot of toast and soup . Your body will tell you what it wants and in the first 2 weeks just try to be as healthy as possible .

I put on a stone sadly and by the time I came up to my third op in June I had decided that I was going to do it differently . This was 3 hours and I are normally before the op and for the week after and then started on exante TS . I was very conscious it was early but I felt that I desperately needed to detox and lose weight. I did tell my surgeon ( and district nurses ) and I believe my recovery has very much been down to this diet . There are loads of papers on healing and immunity and VLCD diets . Like I said not a doctor but it has worked very well for me as a sensible intelligent adult making a choice I felt best for me. In my humble opinion. Good luck with the decision and most of all with the operation and healing . Xxxxx

That's worth knowing :) do wonder if ws could potentially work? With a high protein meal in the evening maybe. Will ask the surgeon see what she says. I just know if i give myself the green light you'll all have to winch me back out a bargain bucket!lol

What about 3 shakes and a meal? I mean it would still limit my intake, fitnesspal says 1200 calories per day, i'd be attaining that i reckon. After my op this is. Seriously gonna ask if the surgeon is okay with that, red day sw teas i can handle.
