ALL THE PHONE NUMBERS IN YOUR PHONE are now on facebook! Go to the top right of the screen, click on ACCOUNT, click on EDIT FRIENDS, on the left side of screen click CONTACTS. You will see that all phone numbers stored in your mobile phone (FB friends or not) are published. TO REMOVE, go to the right column, click on "this page" and follow instructions. Please repost this on your status, so your friends can remove their numbers and thus prevent abuse if they do not want

Just copied this from a friend and checked. Its made me feel a bit sick to be honest all the contacts in my new phone including drs/dentist etc are automatically put to my fb somehow not sure who can access it but it doesn't feel nice!

Same here, only the peeps who have chosen to have theirs on facebook are there. I know mine used to be on there as I got FB update text messages, but they drove me mad so I removed it. FB tries to get me to re-add it at least once a week, but so far I'm refusing :D

I didn't knowingly put mine on either so it may help some people be aware

I checked mine, and what you said was right, my granma's phone number was there etc. and she isn't on facebook lol
Thankyou very much! x

Thank you so much for posting that and warning people of just what they have got themselves into. It is a total invasion of your privacy and your rights.

I deactivated my whole account a month or so ago as I dislike what FB has become intensely.

I know you have privacy buttons etc but the whole thing is a no no for me.

Because I have never given my mobile phone number to Facebook, the only numbers in that list are two people who obviously did supply their numbers - none of my other contacts are there.

But in rummaging around in my "profile" I found a link to a website which has a story about me dating from 2007. I didn't put it there - no idea how it got there! I have now deleted it.

So although the phone thing wasn't relevant to me, this thread did make me go and look for other things, so thank you for the warning!

I am probably being a bit dim here, but what I really don't understand is how this works. If someone puts their phone number on Facebook, how does FB then know all the numbers on their phone?

Leaving aside the privacy issues for the moment, I want to know how they do that!

I'm not sure how it all works!
I haven't given facebook my number but I do access my facebook using my phone. I did not choose to sync my contacts but when checked this I found it had been done and also in my phone contacts I have photos (profile pics) of the people who have given facebook their phone number and don't know how to change that either!
Although my contacts can't be seen by friends etc it doesn't seem right that whoever the powers that be at fb are can access all this info etc
I know I don't have to be on fb but would like to be but am beginning to go off the whole thing!

Is that phone hacking !!! :D

Bloody Hell !!!!!

I have just looked at Paul's FB. He never uses it unless it is to keep in touch with friends in Zimbabwe. It is 3 months since he looked at it. He has never posted a phone number, but there is the list !!!!!!

What a shock and what an infringement of the privacy of the people whose numbers have been published. I wonder were they asked if their numbers could be so public.

The problem is that if FB changes its settings then your details can be public until you put your privacy settings back on as sometimes it can accidentally remove your privacy settings.Apparently it happened before and people weren't aware their details were public. You need to recheck your settings regularly.

But if you can see mobile numbers of your friends what's wrong with that, they're your friends afterall:confused:

Yes, I see your point, but it is the wider issue that concerns me.

First of all, how is it done? If I give you my mobile phone number, would you be able to list all the other numbers on there? I don't think so, so how are FB doing it?

Secondly, why are they doing it? What's the purpose of it - I don't get it. It is of no benefit to me to go onto FB and see all my contact numbers listed - they are already on my phone. And if it is true that no-one else can see them (and I am not convinced of that) then what's the point? Who gains from this? There must be a point, or why do it?

And then there is the question - what if something goes wrong? What if there is a security breach at Facebook and the information gets out? That sort of thing is happening all the time.

edited - more information:
Just read this
http://www.hoax-slayer.com/phone-numbers-facebook-warning.shtml
which kind of answers my question earlier, but not entirely.

Scrolling down through the comments, it would seem that this gathering of numbers only happens if you use your mobile phone to access FB, which kind of makes sense. (At least I think it does!)

I had a look at it and it seems like it pulls a lot of the numbers from other peoples profiles, if they have them on display, but also there was people I dont know (who had the local taxi number listed as their phone number!) and people I used to know but am not in touch with any more.

I dont know how they put all this together, or how long it has been gathering this information, some of the contacts on there havent been on my phone in a long time but it would explain why they keep popping up as a friend suggestion.

I have noticed that I get friend suggestions sometimes referring to people I am linked to by email - that is, not necessarily that I have sent them an email, but I have received one which has been sent to a number of other people.

But this week I got a friend suggestion about someone I know very slightly but I have never shared an email with him. Some months ago I did google him, however, as I had seen him on television. Very odd.
